Can anyone recommendation a good laundry detergent (or deterfent/fabric conditioners for fresh/nice smelling sheets.

Don't know why, but I never like the smell of our sheets when I put them on the bed (everything else including towels is ok).

I wouldn't focus on loading up on nice-smelling detergents and conditions, I'd just worry about getting horrible smells out. So, focusing on fresh, clean smells rather than synthetic flowery smells from chemicals.

For white sheets, I use 1/3 biological powder mixed with 1/3 soda crystals and 1/3 Napisan with a glug of lemon Zoflora in the liquid section of the drawer. If your sheets weren't white, I'd use 1/2 biological powder, 1/2 soda crystals.
I always dry outside when possible, or at least in a very well-aired room.

I keep my bedding in the same cupboard as I keep spare bar soaps and I find the smell of the soap also kind of infuses. But I hoard soap so it might be sheer volume.

I pride myself on my bedding always smelling fresh and lovely.

Thanks for your reply.

Both DH and DD have sensitive skins, different reactions so I do keep to non biological products.

Interesting re: keeping soaps alongside bedding. That can't do any harm.

Ariel is the only thing that keeps mine smelling fresh. I don't bother with fabric softener

Same here.

I love the smell of Ariel gel. I use it when I wash everyday, coloured clothes like T-shirts, trousers, jeans, hoodies etc. I don't find it very good on what I call 'dirty' laundry like pants, socks, bedding though. I prefer a mix of biological powder and other gubbins for that.

But, I think Ariel have changed the recipe recently. It doesn't smell the same, or as strongly as it used to. Anyone else find this?

Like others, I never use fabric conditioner - so bad for fibers.

I just use the lenor or comforts, along with any cheap brand washing powder, normally Aldi or Lidl's own brand. My particular favourite is the blue ones, blue skies or spring awakening. That's not to say it will work for everyone. My mother in law uses bold lavender but that doesn't make mine smell as fresh as hers.
Trial & error, do a sniff test!

I really like the Ecover Non Bio for bedding, specifically the Lavender and Eucalyptus one, which smells really fresh (they make a sandalwood one too, but I'm not so keen, and personally I'd give that a swerve!)

It takes some finding annoyingly; you can't always find it in the supermarket. But you can usually get in from Amazon: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Ecover-Non-Concentrated-Detergent-Lavender-Eucalyptus/dp/B002RFWPWM

Sodium percarbonate for whites, sodium bicarb or alum powder for odour: all 100% natural and hypoallergenic.

I use the fragranced flakes from French Soaps, really cheap and lightly fragranced but with essential oil. That may not work for you with allergies. They do plain ones too that are hypoallergenic so will give “clean” but no scent and save you £’s

They're all just chemicals too surely though, just different ones

TheNuthatch · 21/10/2024 21:22

Which detergent are you currently using op?
I think a lot depends on how you dry them. I always line or air dry sheets.

JobMatch3000 · 21/10/2024 21:38

Non-bio is surely not going to wash out bio dirt such as sweat, skin etc which is what you need for bedding!
Don't overfill your machine, bio powder, hot wash and a good glug of vinegar in the fabric conditioner dispenser to get rid of any residual soap.

Autumnweddingguest · 21/10/2024 21:42

Fairy non-bio with half a capful of zoflora linen if you like floral or rhubarb and cassis if you like fruity.
I love the smell of Waitrose own bio liquid but if you have sensitive skin Fairy non bio is very gentle.

TidyWasp · 21/10/2024 22:55

I'd highly recommend an antibacterial laundry cleanser (Dettol being the main brand but Lidl and probably other supermarkets do a knock off). I mix about half and half with my fabric softener and it makes things smell so clean and fresh. Also find a sprinkle of soda crystals in the drum with bedding gets any grime out and leaves it all nice and soft.

Go natural. It’s cheaper and works.
sodium Percarbonate (not bicarbonate). Or Alum powder.

I love Wilton’s Cedarwood laundry liquid for washing bed linen. Not cheap but eco friendly and a lovely fresh natural smell.
Even better if you can dry your linen outside.
I used to buy it from Lakeland but have seen it in Sainsbury recently.

Nsky62 · 23/10/2024 02:11

Bio d are great, subtle fragrances buy online, Ocado or health food shop, they have an eco bleach too.
Great stuff

Late to the party op but I have quite a thing for all things laundry and have tried them all. Nothing beats the smell (imo) of Asevi Marseille Soap. It’s a Spanish brand and can be bought in lots of places now but I get mine on Amazon for £6 ish for a huge bottle. It just smells “clean”

my absolute guilty pleasure though is Downy fabric softener from America in April Fresh which I’ve been using for years but only use for certain items because it’s so bloody expensive but worth every penny. Again I buy from Amazon and costs about £12-15 a bottle but lasts me ages. I tell dp it’s a fiver.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 26/10/2024 20:19

At the moment , Aldi Coconut powder or liquid . I try and use the powder more as it's better for the machine .
