Is my dishwasher dying or worth saving ?

Help ! I have an old integrated Bosch dishwasher in my kitchen it will be between 10-15 years at a guess - as we inherited IT when we moved in and have been here over 8 years , it wasn't anywhere like new when we moved in.

Anyway it has been ok but seems to have given up now - when we run it there is no heat , no sounds apart from trickling water , no oomph , no water coming out of the spray arms.
Would this be a dead pump?

Anyone had similar and can help me diagnose ? If I was feeling flush I would just replace it but realistically if it can be revived at a reasonable cost then I probably need to try.

Any advice welcome !

TIA

Also if I am buying new ..
I always fancied the cutlery shelf rather than the basket -
Is that a bad idea ?

We replaced our old one after a couple of attempts to have it repaired.

Couldn't believe the difference in how clean things were and that things no longer needed an extra rinse or to go through again. 😂

I think over the years we'd got accustomed to the old dishwasher and just assumed that its temperamental cleaning was normal.

We just replaced our dishwasher this week - a Serie 4 Bosch replacing a Serie 6 Bosch.

I like the look of the cutlery drawer, but found it reduced the head room available for items in the top basket quite a bit. We have quite a few large glasses and with the cutlery drawer these didn’t fit, even if the top basket was adjusted to be lower. Adjusting the top basket obviously has a knock on effect in the room in the bottom basket which then meant our plates didn’t fit. It was a fun evening looking at dishwashers with glasses and cardboard plates to test out if everything fit. So we had to go with a cutlery basket.

In the end we replaced a Serie 6 Bosch with a Serie 4, which seems to be pretty much identical with a few minor differences in the programs and options. The internal layout and space is identical to the old machine.

We've just replaced our 10 year old AEG with a series 6. Discounted the series 4 because of the plastic interior which I'd read there had been some issues with. Series 6 is stainless steel.
Ours has a "smart" connection which I haven't downloaded yet. Don't know if I'll bother.
It has the drying crystal thing in it which is supposed to be very good at drying stuff. (Seems ok but probably I'd prefer one which door opens when cycle finishes)
I had to contact Bosch about an issue and was pleased (and surprised) to get through very quickly and they were very helpful. The reason I didn't buy another AEG was because their customer service was non existent.
It has a cutlery drawer but I've had both options previously and have no real preference.

Slight hijack, but, are there any cutlery baskets that don’t get holes in the bottom after no time at all?
I think I’m on about the third or fourth one with this dishwasher even though I never put knives or anything sharp point down in it. Branded and none branded are equally rubbish. Do cutlery trays last longer?

I'm another one who hasn't had any experience of baskets getting holes in them.

Our first dishwasher and the basket lasted about 13 years, the second one about 7 years (which was disappointing, but it was the cheapest available Bosch, only about £250 and very basic) but we kept the basket after hearing all these stories about the baskets failing and we're now about 3 years into a Bosch Serie 6, which has both a basket and a tray at the top which is good for things like serving spoons and also lids from plastic boxes.

For the OP, I'd definitely replace at that age, you could be lucky and a £100-200 repair get you another few years but equally you could be spending 2/3 of the cost of a new dishwasher on a repair that only lasts a few months and a new one is likely to be more energy efficient so another tick in the column for replace vs repair (we used this argument to replace a 25 YO still working fridge freezer that used 4 times the amount of electricity as a new one).

My 16 Yr old AEG went capital on Friday. I have bought thus one today £419 from Currys

Is my dishwasher dying or worth saving ?
Hohofortherobbers · 21/10/2024 19:59

As a heads up, I took my dinner plate in to check and the arm didn't clear this one which has a cutlery shelf, the bottom shelf is much less roomey to allow space for the 3rd cutlery shelf

It arrives Saturday...I'll report back

holidayfever2024 · 22/10/2024 20:23

Thanks @Hohofortherobbers I am still limping on waiting to take the plunge so that's helpful- I am very tempted to stick with the basket now. Dh said 'better the devil you know!'

I also have never heard of cutlery baskets not lasting but will hang on to my ancient Bosch one just in case !

We just replaced our integrated one from, we think, 2011, with a used one off eBay for £40. I was dead against this initially but DH pointed out no point putting a new one into a kitchen we're likely to replace within a few years and if it didn't work out, we'd not lost much.

He was able to fit himself though, having exhausted attempts to start the old one.

My new bosch serie 2 arrived Saturday to my ridiculous excitement 😄
Installed ourselves easily. Momentarily concerned we'd been delivered a green model as the door had a film on it that had to be peeled off. Blush.
It's pretty straightforward. A little nosier than the old one. But my oh my the dishes and glasses are SPARKLING ✨️
V happy 😊

I love my cutlery tray, most people forget about adjusting the height of the top tray to work best for their dinner plates and glasses.

This. The green peelable film was a surprise and I remembered reading a review on AO ( I think) where a woman loved her new dishwasher but didn't like the green colour and had to change her kitchen decor. Poor woman.
