TOMM - is it realistic?

I've got the book for The Organised Mum Method and admittedly I haven't yet read it all but I'm starting to lose hope and wanted to know if it actually works and is realistic.

I've lost hope at the level 1 jobs - so your daily jobs that are supposed to total 15 minutes. This includes one load of laundry (washing, drying, and folding and putting away), vacuuming, quick clean of bathroom, keep on top of the kitchen throughout the day. What on earth?!? Am I missing something? How in any world is that possible within 15 minutes? Those jobs alone would take me maybe over an hour, if I was being quick! And that's outside of the 30 minutes of housework each day. And where's the washing up, and cooking and making lunches?

Please enlighten me before I toss this book away!

The cleanalongs are amazing and you'll be astounded at what you can get done in 15 mins when someone is bossing you about (in a lovely way!). I used to use them a lot before we cheated and got a cleaner.

Anyone who thinks you can do a load of laundry, vacuuming, cleaning the bathroom and keeping the kitchen clean and tidy all in 15 minutes hasn't got 4 cats and no dishwasher.

I really rate it but I don’t pay attention to the timings. I have found that breaking down the work across the week makes it so much easier to keep on top of it rather than spending hours one day doing it all. I’ve found I do need another day for bathrooms though, doing them bit by bit doesn’t work for me. And I do some weekday jobs on a weekend as it’s easier to find time, and then have the days ‘off’ in the week.

Do you mind me asking Happierthaneverr
why doing bathrooms over the week doesn’t work for you? Bit of a personal question that you don’t have to answer. It’s just I really want to make this work but so have to get up so early to make it happen!

The only time I managed to follow this was in lockdown!

onemorerose · 21/10/2024 21:25

Oh this has got me really interested. I usually set a timer and go round rooms but then leave it for days and it all builds up again. Did someone say the rocks method is on the app? Are you tied into the app or can you cancel at any time?

HarrietJonesFlydaleNorth · 21/10/2024 21:51

I try to keep to the general principle of proactive cleaning rather than reactive.

So whizzing the hoover round each morning doesn't mean doing a proper job and moving all the furniture, but getting the main areas - and if I miss any bits they'll be picked up tomorrow.

Running over things with the duster more frequently before there's dust to notice means it's quicker and easier.

Same with the bathroom- I wipe over the sink, taps and loo when I've finished getting ready in the mornings.

I do usually do a load of laundry every day, but I always have done it that way.

Oh and never leaving a room empty handed! My Nanna taught me that one I think!

For me it's having little routines that help me keep on top of it all before it gets out of hand.

Not @Happierthaneverr but I do bathroom at the weekends because I clean the shower when I'm in it. It makes sense for me to do this rather than get clothes wet. But weekdays I have a 5-10min shower. I need time to be scrubbing taps down and shower screens so need more like 20 mins which I can only get on Sunday morning.

I think it helps you think about things too, like why am I folding the children's boxer shorts and Dh's boxers (I am a sahm so did all the laundry) and I just realised I can put them into a drawer, not folded. The only people that see them are us. Same with Dh's sleep t shirts and my knickers. Why oh why am I folding them? They just go into the drawer.

I think the videos she uploaded onto Youtube years ago helped me when I first started. I think it helps you to keep on top of the tidying and after a few weeks there is less to clean and tidy. My children still both fold back their duvet covers every morning. They are 21 and 18!

Wiping over a bathroom sink and then a toilet should not take you more than what 90 seconds? But then I was trained as a cleaner in a hotel. I use no rinse products because I am not wiping twice, I use one wet cloth with product on to clean using my right hand and a car detail terry cloth to dry and buff using myleft hand. I have pink for sink cloths and blue for loo. They get chucked into a tub and they all get washed together once a fortnight. Toilet brush to clean (each to their own) then it gets wedged under the seat to dry. I don't know why people have an issue with a toilet brush, no skids are ever left in our toilets as everyone checks the bowl after use. As a hotel room cleaner we definitely used toilet brushes.

The shower is squeegeed after use, and I clean it whilst I am in it as I am wet anyway so whilst the conditioner sits on my hair I can clean. Scrub Daddy sponge in hand I do the bath and tiles.

I find I’ve enough on with the daily jobs and the main reason really is because I have a little cleaning caddy and I find it easier to get it out in one go than be getting it out and doing bits each day. I also have young DC who want to play in the bath so I focus on that.

Thank you for explaining Crazyeight

That makes sense!

Happierthaneverr thank you very much, and understood; young dc add a completely different set of priorities!

I know this is an old thread but does anyone have issues when you try and play your own music on the app (not Patreon). It doesn't go in and out of volume like it's supposed to. I have tried 3 or 4 times to ask the TOM team and all they do is delete my question?!?
Thanks all

I’ve never really been able to get the app to work.

I find it works if I start my music FIRST always. Otherwise no. It is a little erratic occasionally and sometimes I have to stop everything and restart in order, but (touch wood) it's never a persistent problem.
