  1. If you have been a lazy slattern like me and have been washing all your clothes in one load (i.e. not separating out colours, whites, etc) and then realised that your all your white clothes are looking a bit grey, is there any way of getting them white again?
  1. What is the reason you can't put warm food in the fridge or freezer? This is probably me being a bit dim but I thought it was best to chill/freeze things as soon as you can, but DP makes me wait for hours until they're cold before putting them into the fridge or freezer. Surely that means germs or things can grow in them before they are frozen?

  1. yes, in tesco they sell a colour run thing, will improve the whiteness.
  1. becuase you upset the temp in the fridge making it work harder and upsetting the balance iyswim for the other food. cover the food you leave to cool.
CatIsSleepy · 23/04/2008 12:14

1 don't know
2 have just done some googling and it seems there's no problem with the food itself being warm when you put it in the fridge, it's the effect the warm food has on the overall temperature of the fridge
but unless you are putting loads of v. hot stuff in there I can't see this being a problem

They have some brighter white stuff in the laundry aisle. Or alternatively you could try a drop of bleach - this is more risky though if you have coloured ares on the clothes or even stitching that might whiten to a different degree to the garment.

  1. Washing soda crystals. In a sep. ball and then the usual whites liquid.
  2. As Scorpio says

Ah, thank you. Will have a look for some washing whitening things. I'm glad me putting warm food in the fridge isn't the end of the world (as DP was acting as though it was!) - its only normally one small tupperware container of leftover dinner anyway.

  1. buy 'Vanish for whites' powder in a (white) tub - all supermarkets do it.
  1. Warm food may raise the temperature within the fridge/ freezer and provide good environment for growing bugs / slightly defrost food in freezer with the same effect.

use colour catcher sheets in your wash in future, they really work and you don't have to seperate.

as scorpio say except for meat iirc, and it's not so much the cooling down rapidly but the sealing in clingfilm while warm can make it rot (according to gordon ramsey anyway)

white are fixable with sachets as others have said.

re-cooling food down before putting in the fridge....if you are worried and if it is in a water tight container then you could half fill the sink with cold water and put the container in the sink. the cold water will cool the food down to a temp suitable to being able to put it into the fridge. I do this if I need to put something into the fridge and am either going out or I have been cooking late and want to go to bed!
