Window Draft

We moved house last year and have a Victorian Cottage, which has windows in it that are more than 15 years old.

At this time of year especially, they get condensation on the inside, and feel drafty, Which I don’t mind in some rooms, but the lounge is especially cold as it’s North facing and gets no sunlight, so eager to find a solution until we can afford to replace them.

They are standard double Glazed UPVC by the way.

Thanks 🤞

The draught proof tape will be your best tool, if you look around on eBay or Amazon, you can find it in various thicknesses for whatever gaps you have, you can use it on your external doors too.

A dehumidifier will work wonders for the humidity, unfortunately they aren't exactly cheap. But lowering the humidity will make the house easier to heat and less humid/damp forboennies a hour compared to portable heaters.

If you're unconvinced, buy a cheap humidity sensor l, if it's much above 50% humidity, it's worth getting one.

We had our sash windows professionally restored with https://surreysashwindowspecialist.co.uk/, draught proofing, painting etc. Painfull process, but it's made a difference.

Thanks. I will look into the tape.

It’s hard to pin point where the draft is coming from in the windows. They are bay and have a large wooden window sills (modern wood, not old) and the wood gets so cold to touch!

We already have a dehumidifier and have it on now and then to draw out moisture.

Its such a large room and so hard to heat. We are going to get a curtain across to divide and help keep the heat in the seating area more.

we have these huge modern tall radiators that im convinced arent as good as the previous owners made out. They take so long to warm up and barely make a difference in such a large room.

i think this house needs a heating overhaul 🤭

Rant over!
