Tap water

Hi MNetters

Are you happy drinking tap water?

Or do you filter the tap water ? Buy bottled water? Or something else?

What do you drink your water/cold drink out of when you're on the move? Plastic? Metal? Glass?

Thanks for the advice 🙂

We don’t drink tap water whatsoever nowadays. I find that it has a very chlorinated taste. We have a Brita filter jug in our fridge, as well as a Brita kettle so absolutely everything (even water that’s going to be boiled for pasta etc) gets filtered. Also tend to buy quite a lot of bottled - before the MN police get on to me we recycle all plastic bottles and buy glass where possible!

Peonies12 · 05/10/2024 12:29

We have a Brita filter, that’s mostly as our water is very hard so it helps keep the kettle limescale free. Bottled water should be banned or taxed a lot!

Honeysuckle16 · 05/10/2024 12:30

We live in Scotland so the tap water is excellent. We have a fridge which filters and chills the water but often just drink it straight from the tap.

HavfrueDenizKisi · 05/10/2024 12:31

Yes we drink London tap water. It is via our fridge so is filtered. It's absolutely fine. Tastes fine. Out and about we use chilly bottles (so metal).

In my opinion buying still drinking water in plastic bottles is a triumph of marketing over common sense.

vodkaredbullgirl · 05/10/2024 12:34

Hate drinking water.

How so? I’m all aware that I could solely drink our filtered water - I just choose not to. Mineral water isn’t a con, different brands do have different tastes and our household certainly have a preference. I do agree however that certain brands are a scam. Smartwater for example is just bottled tap water.

YSianiFlewog · 05/10/2024 13:03

I live in Wales, the water tastes lovely. No need to filter.

Flopsythebunny · 05/10/2024 13:22

I have a double filter on my cold water supply because I cannot stand the taste of tap water. it costs me around £60 every 2 years to replace the filters

TheLurpackYears · 05/10/2024 13:25

I'm in the UK, the tap water is absolutely fine to drink. Out and about, however it comes.

Safe to drink and pleasant to drink aren’t mutually exclusive!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 05/10/2024 14:13

I'm in W Yorks. Our tap water is delicious. Our water is the stuff that's sold by navy supermarkets as their "basics" bottle water (it'll say "bottled at source in HD* * *).

JLS101020 · 05/10/2024 14:13

I don’t drink water cos I just find it horrible regardless where it’s from. & reminds me of when I was a teen & would down a pint of water to be able to be sick if I was hungover 🤣 However, my 2 youngest exclusively drink water, my 8 year old won’t touch bottled water at all. Hates it, says it taste like water out the dog bowl (Not sure how he knows how that tastes!) so will only drink from the tap. You get will drink bottled or tap.

FlowersOfSulphur · 05/10/2024 14:23

Our water is supplied by Thames Water and tastes fine straight from the tap. I tend to drink coffee/tea more than plain water, but when I do have water, I drink it from a drinking glass. If I'm out and about, I take a steel water bottle filled with tap water. I prefer to avoid bottled water because of the higher levels of microplastics and feminising hormones it contains, and because of the environmental impact - plastic recycling is a mess, and every piece of plastic that was ever made is still hanging around.

PutOnYourRedShoesAndLetsDance · 05/10/2024 14:25

Yorkshire here.. apparently ours is one of the best
Yes l drink it . Always take a metal flask of cold water out with me .
I do buy bottled sparkling water.
Apart from one cup of decaff tea each morning. I only drink water .

Westfacing · 05/10/2024 14:33

I drink Thames Water from the tap, with a dash of elderflower cordial.

I don't carry water or any other drink when I'm out and about on ordinary every day business - it's unnecessary.

Bestyearever2024 · 05/10/2024 15:19

Thank you all. Very interesting 👌

So..... I'm thinking that the softer the water, the better/ more pleasant it is to drink?

Those of you who use Brita filters....I assume you're in hard water areas? Which of their filters do you use?

My tap water is contaminated with silt & gravel. I only use bottled water, even in the kettle. Big 5L bottle for around £1.50.

Davros · 05/10/2024 15:34

Eau de Thames only for me. It's fine, all that paraphernalia, filter jugs and filters or piles of plastic bottles. Nah

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 05/10/2024 16:02

Thames water, we have a filter. It's cloudy without.

ApolloandDaphne · 05/10/2024 16:06

Lovely Scottish water straight out the tap here.

gingercat02 · 05/10/2024 16:26

Yes, rarely any other kind. Even in restaurants, we ask for a jug of tap water. I try to take a refillable bottle out with me rather than buy a bottle.

MoreCardassianThanKardashian · 05/10/2024 16:32

I live in a hard water area but didn't grow up in one so notice the difference. However, I've always had tap water with squash. I don't have a filter.

As PP above says, bottled water is extremely wasteful especially if in 500ml.

I honestly just use whatever one they have on offer in the supermarket! No, we’re actually in a soft water area - it used to be lovely and I happily drank it for my whole life but it has just gotten increasingly chlorinated in the last few years. Some days turning the tap on smells like a swimming pool, hence I avoid drinking it
