Has anyone ever hired a decluttering expert?

I'm wondering whether I should consider it!

I have so much to do and so little motivation, energy etc

Watching with interest as I have the same problem Confused

Hi Notmore!

People I know get friends or family to help but I don't have friends I could ask this of and family are too far away and have their hands full.

I partly think if £x would move me out of this paralysis then I would pay that! But it's the shame of getting help maybe.

Also my DH who great in most respects. Wants the house sorted - but he can't really cope with the mess it takes to get there - do you know what I mean?

You can't make an omelette I say but it sort of freaks him out.

My feeling is I can't do anything without getting it all out. I can't do bitsized decluttering!

Yes I have, it was specifically to get my paperwork in order. She was good, efficient, fast and kept me on track. Cost me about £85. We put good systems in place that I've kept up with in the following 3 years since.

I've thought about it but ultimately begrudge paying money for something I know I can do myself - eventually. Plus the lady near me who runs a decluttering business gives freebies to local bloggers so they promote her, and I don't want to give her a penny because of that either. I also don't want my before photos plastered all over her social media!

wildfellhall · 03/10/2024 14:00

Tulip8 that's so good. Was she an admin specialist?

Stillat, I totally get that - I could not have my befores out there in public!

That sort of thing, I always say to my sister, is like sticking your arse out the window for people passing to score.

She just has a decluttering business I had come across on Facebook. Best bit about her was she gives exit plans. So she'll take things to the tip, charity shop runs etc. In my instance she brought along a bag for shredding confidential waste and I paid a local company to dispose of it for me.

Tulip8 · 03/10/2024 14:05

I should say I run my own business so had more than your general household paperwork.

NewDayNewBeginnings · 03/10/2024 14:07

Yes they do hire them, as I have a decluttering business and I have plenty of business. Most clients find it easier to keep on top of things once they have had that initial help with sorting and organising everything.

TimelyIntervention · 03/10/2024 14:10

One of my friends has hired one and declared it the best money she’s ever spent!

It is difficult, because it feels like something you “shouldn’t” need to pay someone to help with. But then I have a cleaner who is an absolute life saver, when I’m physically perfectly capable of cleaning!

mondaytosunday · 03/10/2024 14:11

Yes. I saw it like having a personal trainer - it provides motivation and accountability. Sure I can go to the gym AMD euro out by myself, but if I'm paying someone I'm actually going to do it and do it well!
I initially hired her to declutter before I sold my house. I knew I'd be moving to one a lot smaller. She helped enormously and streamlined my possessions and got me in to better storage habits. She also helped sort my paperwork and set up a proper filing system. Then she helped with the actual move.
Sure all I could have done it all on my own, but the headache and frustration and sheer exhaustion was removed. She's now become a good friend too! We now have a different business arrangement (she helps runs my Airbnb as I live too far away). Being a friend and employee has worked out well so far.

Have you looked at A Slob Comes Clean? She is all about decluttering without making a mess . . .
