Cold slightly musty clothes in build it wardrobe

We recently had a built in wardrobe fitted, the clothes (shoved together) in the corner seem cold and slightly musty. What can we do to reduce this, it's build on a outside wall so I know it could be condensation. I have put in those little bags that reduce condensation but anything else I can use? Is there a machine or something that I can use occasionally in there? I suppose it would help if it were less stuffed.

A dehumidifier in the room would help

dudsville · 28/09/2024 19:43

I have this problem too. The simplest solution is to leave the wardrobe door open. I did buy a small dehumidifier but it was pathetic. Would love to find an efficient one.

Is the room heated with radiators all the time apart from the summer?

DeepBlueSeas · 28/09/2024 19:53

Could you try reducing the amount of clothes you have in there, to give them more space to breathe? Keep the doors open slightly
An electric dehumidifier in the room should also help a lot.

We live in a Victorian mid terrace so are used to cold and occasional damp/condensation on the walls in colder seasons - we have two dehumidifiers running for about 12 hours a day and it’s helps massively. Warms the room up too.

Crazykefir · 28/09/2024 19:54

Are you drying your clothing fully? Is the room damp?

flapjackfairy · 28/09/2024 19:57

we live in an old house and we had this so.i would leave the wardrobe door open for a few hours a day when the heating was on which sorted it

CatChant · 28/09/2024 20:05

I had the same problem with a built-in wardrobe on an outside wall and running a small dehumidifier inside the wardrobe has solved it.

DillDanding · 28/09/2024 20:15

We have small heating bars in any wardrobes next to cold walls. They’re on smart plugs and come on for about 2 hours at night and cost next to nothing to run. Completely solves the problem.

My Dad had similar issue and put Styrofoam on the wall as insulation. Seems to work!

suki1964 · 28/09/2024 20:26

I have a built in-wardrobe in a huge room thats never used so of course I got damp and then mould.

First off, I cleaned it all then I reconfigured it so there was nothing covering the walls in the corners

I do use the disposable humidifiers in the corners still

The only way to stop the damp is to get the heat in there . Heat and ventilation. So for me it was doing the above and then leaving the door open so the heating of the room circulated

Ours isn't small but it's very good and it's lasted at least 8 years.

It's an Ebac one but I don't know which model sorry.

Thanks, I'll Google that!

We had this in our last house- new build.
I would never have a fitted wardrobe on an outside wall.
We put hardboard on the inside of the wardrobe on the outside wall.
But in the end I put a thick jumper that end which was never warn , just washed periodically.

wavingfuriously · 28/09/2024 22:15

Same situation here, ebac dehumidifier and disposable ones aswell 👍 really helps.
Plus heat of course and open windows - a bit, when you're home

ForPearlViper · 28/09/2024 22:29

I would also say dehumidifier (a good sized one) - also fab for drying your washing.

However, this last year has been exceptional. I have lived in my house for ten years with no damp problems but in the last year I have had a lot more condensation, etc. The only thing that has changed is we've had so much rain. Here's hoping for a better year ahead.

Nitgel · 28/09/2024 22:40

Thanks some helpful advice. I will order a dehumidifier too.

We have this in the built in wardrobes in the eaves of our house. Solutions as mentioned already, we keep the doors propped open all the time from autumn until spring and limit how much stuff is hanging to improve air flow. (Out of season clothes in cases elsewhere). We use these hanging dehumidifier things at all times and replace regularly - it's amazing how much moisture they collect.

I recommend Meaco dehumidifiers.
This is the one we've got
