One wardrobe for a family of 5?

Okay not a one tiny wardrobe. We are moving house to a new build, the bedrooms are much smaller than where we live now and I don’t want wardrobes taking up space in my children’s bedrooms. They are 5,3&1. In the master bedroom is a huge fitted in wardrobe the length of the bedroom which I could fit everyone’s clothes in. What age could I get away with this until? Am I stupid to think I could do this?

It doesn't strike me as stupid. After all, you can always buy small wardrobes, or divan beds with drawers underneath for your kids if you try it and don't like it. The same with what age would it stop working...it'll work until it doesn't and then you do something else.

The thing that I would find annoying about this would be situations like:

One of the kids is sick overnight or wets the bed so the person who is up needs to rummage around in the master bedroom for fresh clothes, waking up the other one

Similarly, one of us isn't well or trying to have a lie in but the other one would need to get the kids clothes out

We are all trying to get ready for work/school in the same bedroom. I really like that our kids now wake up, get into their uniform independently and we don't have to get involved.

I think in your position, I might look to use the big wardrobe for storing the kids clothes that are out of season or that the youngest hasn't grown into yet or whatever but get them beds with drawers underneath for their day to day clothes and PJs

Learn to fold clothes and you dont need so much wardrobe space

I only have dresses and coats in my wardrobe , everything else is folded and in drawers. Childrens clothes in particular are easily stored in drawers , even in the drawers in beds

If one of the bedrooms was a dressing room it would work, but like @exprecis says, too much rifling round in my bedroom for other people's stuff would get on my nerves pretty damn quick.

But only you know if it will work for your family. Try it?

Yes, my DC ( boys, so no dresses) had all their clothes in drawers until secondary school, when they needed hanging space for shirts.
One of them had a tiny room with no space for a wardrobe so his shirts and blazer went on hooks on the back of the door.

I didn't give my kids wardrobes until they were teens when they had more formal uniform. Do they actually need a wardrobe? Can they just have a chest of drawers and then reserve a small section of your wardrobe for anything that really needs hanging?

lopdoo · 29/09/2024 08:20

Although yes I had boys also so no dresses!

Children 11 & 12, dp and me and we all use one large fitted wardrobe, i roll most clothing and half the wardrobe is cube storage i put in but if you like hanging clothes you could raise the rail and then add a second rail underneath for smaller items like children’s clothes

My DSs only have drawers/ shelves. Their blazers and smart shirts go in the spare room wardrobe.

I used to have my clothes stored in different rooms and it was a PITA. It is simpler if they are mainly in one room, certainly for frequently used items.

I'd prefer not to store the DCs' clothes in my room from.a developing independence point of view if other options were availiable.
