How to get rid of Maggots in your bin

Just had a horrible case of loads of maggots in the bin, it came from left over cat food. Then bin not emptied twice. It was disgusting. Searched and found the best remedy. SALT, its killed them quickly and very cheaply. I sprayed a weak bleach solution all over and they were still crawling. They crawl up the inside of the bin. So spayed everywhere and then poured loads of salt in, and around the rim of the bin. Its worked brilliantly.

We had this a few years back from a chicken carcass, we now double bag any leftovers like this and haven't had the issue since

I had maggots the other day now our bins are on fortnightly 🤢 will try that instead of boiling water as it didn’t help much. Also heard bread soaked in white vinegar placed in the bottom of the bin prevents them but have yet to try that as couldn’t find any white vinegar in the shops so need to order online

Our green (garden & food waste) bin sometimes has maggots over the summer. I just leave the lid open after it's been emptied and the birds pick it clean. Occasionally swill it out.

Exactly what @Chasingsquirrels said it's much much better to let the birds meat them if you can - it's actually good to watch as well!

Flip the lid open and walk away. The maggots crawl out and disperse or are eaten by birds.

I suppose this might be less easy if you live somewhere where you bin has to be close to your house/the street. We are fortunate that the bin is away from the house, near a hedge and grass, so maggots dispersing doesn't worry anyone!

Maggots come from flies, so the more things you have that discourage them the better. Double bagging food waste, keeping spiders around, not letting puddles of water develop all help,

Theunamedcat · 17/09/2024 09:02

I will open this lid if I can but the stench of maggots is appalling! I've started to layer salt in the bottom of my bin just in case and I have a wheelie bin liner and I will double bag I also use citronella bin freshener not sure if it works 😂

Can you tell I have cats?

FlowersOfSulphur · 17/09/2024 09:55

Was it the inside bin or the outside bin? I empty my inside bin/food waste caddy at least every couple of days to try to prevent this (once a day if it's really warm). I just use small bin liners so they fill up fast!

If it's the outside bin, I don't really mind. I just swill it put with water once emptied.
