How to digitalize old DVDs?

I'm decluttering and have collections of some really good dvds that I'd like to keep eg Game of thrones

Is there a way of downloading them onto laptop, so I can get rid of the discs, or is this piracy??

Thanks!

I have ripped all of mine on to a hard drive using iTunes.

You choose which format to save them in. Low quality mp3 or high quality lossless.

Technically quite possible, but probably more hassle than it's worth, and almost likely to be a breach of copyright as well.

If storage is the issue, you could chuck the boxes and put the DVDs in a DVD cake box or album.

I'd get an album and keep them tbh as long as there's not a huge volume. Electronic storage is really vulnerable to loss. DVDs may not be readable for ever, but at least you won't lose the password.

The only hassle is the time it takes to rip them. Which can be substantial if you have a large collection. If you are working on the computer anyway it isn’t much of an imposition.

I'm assuming I'd need an external dvd player to burn them onto laptop?

Also is it straightforward to download or would need certain software?

You'll need DVD reader, which you computer may already have and some software to "rip" the discs and save the files (Search for "DVD Rip")

The files will be big, and only standard definition, you may also run into issues with copy protection and the region coding of the discs and your drive.
