Degreasing sheets and clothing

DH has quite sweaty, oily skin and although he showers daily (sometimes twice) his clothes, and his side of the bed (pillowcases, sheet and duvet cover) get saturated with oil. We are washing them regularly but the actual oils are still building up and not coming out. Its turning his clothes and sheets greasy and yellowy grey, everything stinks and feels oily. We cannot get the oils out we have tried boil washes for hours, dishwasher tablets, washing things twice, vinegar, baking soda, spraying with degreaser, fairy liquid, soaking them in the bath before washing, bio, non bio, a million types of detergents. its not like a spot treatment will work its an entire garment or half a bed sheet, an entire pillowcase etc so we are spending a fortune on products to try and shift it. We don't use fabric softener on sheets anyway. We just want to be able to totally de-grease our bed sheets and freshen them up properly as well as his clothes. It feels like they don't dry properly because they are so oily and then they smell musty too.
We have checked and there is nothing medically wrong causing this, his whole family have always had oily skin and sweated a lot, so it's genetic. Showering more often only helps so far as it just causes the body to produce more oil.
Has anyone ever managed to find a sustainable solution to this problem?!

Thank you, is borax substitute as good for this? As borax is banned in the UK now due to risk to reproductive health.

Have you tried soaking in soda crystals?
And use bio powder

ForKeenLimeOtter · 08/09/2024 20:33

I use soda crystals. Just add a cup to the washing machine. It's a really good degreaser. Don't use fabric conditioner with your sheets as this makes it worse.

Agree with above posts-
have found the only thing that makes any difference with pillow cases is using Washing Soda (Sodium Carbonate Decahydrate). On a hot wash in the machine, just bedding and a generous amount of the soda.

Was also coming to say soda crystals.

Another vote for soda crystals. I buy it in tesco for £2. You can soak with and put it in the machine. It's a fabulous degreaser. I would put 2 vanish scoops in each load. It might take a few washes, but I think you'll see a difference. I add it along with bio detergent.
You can use white vinegar instead of softener to avoid build up. I use miniml lemon scented white vinegar from amazon, again it's not expensive and you can't smell it afterward, unlike some vingars I've tried!
If I'm dealing with oily shirt collars etc I always pre treat with shampoo. I've found it works much better than fairy on body oil.

Thanks all for your advice- have ordered some borax substitute and some soda crystals, hopefully that'll be the end of the smelly sheets!

If you do use Bio powder/liquid, I believe the enzyme action is only effective to 40 degrees. Anything above that I use non bio,

I’d also recommend soda crystals.

Good brought me here… Did it work with the soda crystals? Did it work first time? And tips on dose?

On the white vinegar recommendations. Which say not to put vinegar in washing machines as it degrades the seals.

CherryRipe1 · 05/06/2025 13:26

Definitely soda crystals. I didn't know Borax was banned so glad I read this thread, I've got an ancient bag of it in my laundry supplies, oh dear. Fairy liquid is good for stripping grease, soak in warm water
with it added but you'll need to hand rinse it then put in the washing machine or else it will be Professor Bubbles Bubble Works.

Hi, yes it did! That was the best solution I found. I put 2 capfuls using my laundry liquid measuring cap
