Opaque film ideas for bathroom windows

trulymadlydeeply · 19/04/2008 08:53

Sorry if this has been done before - new to this I'm afraid.

I need to make our bathroom windows less see-through. I know there's film you can buy but it seems quite pricey.

Has anyone ever sprayed their windows with that opaque spray stuff (maybe using a stencil) and if so, is it easy &/or cheaper than buying the film?

Thanks in advance...

no idea about the spray, but the film stuff from Brume is really, really good

Thanks, MaryAnn. Will have a look if I can find a website.

I'll see if I can find it...we have it on our front door - was quite easy to apply - they do nice bathroomy ones...hang on...

brume here

KatyMac · 19/04/2008 20:37

I sprayed

It was good - but needed lots of coats plus you need to mask around to stop it going on the frame

Plus you 8yo DD can scrape it off when signing her name on the window - she is 10 now.....not sure why she made it that long

JackieNo · 19/04/2008 20:45

Haven't done either, but lots of film designs here.

I second brume - I think it looks very classy. They have window film in DIY shops for about £7 a roll. They might be a bit cheaper and you'd be able to see if it's right for you.

Monkeybird · 19/04/2008 20:50

Brume is VV expensive IMHO (like 40 quid for a small window)

Fablon in B&Q MUCH cheaper...

Snowstorm · 19/04/2008 20:55

I sprayed my downstairs loo window (from outside in the lean-too thing attached over our side return) and put the opaque sticky roll stuff (which I bought from B&Q or Homebase)on my bathroom window.

Both were equally as effective but the spray stuff was easier to put on (needed a couple of coats). With the stuff that you peel off the backing and apply to the window, I found that much more time consuming as it was really tricky to do it without airbubbles getting trapped in there. I ended up popping all the bubbles with a needle and just squashing them down.

I know brume is expensive but really does look good and was honestly very easy to put on,plus they cut it to size for you

margosbeenplayingwithmynoonoo · 19/04/2008 21:36

snowstorm - didn't a squeegee work?

Snowstorm · 19/04/2008 22:08

It was about 8 years ago now so I'm not sure what I used but I don't think it crossed my mind to use a squeegee - I'm strictly amateur level on all DIY stuff! There weren't too many air bubbles but enough that I noticed them and didn't want to notice them, IYKWIM. Looked fine after I'd 'popped' them all, but I had chosen a roll with a pattern on so that was good camoflauge ... was just a bit time consuming!!

janmoomoo · 21/04/2008 13:01

I tried the spray but found it quite difficult to get it looking even and made a bit of a mess TBH. My friend tried the stuff from B&Q and said it was crapola.

The fancy stuff in Brume looks lovely. But its cheaper to order the plain stuff by the meter. I have just ordered some, not from Brume but similar company which I cant remember the name of but was cheaper. There are half a dozen that do the same stuff if you google it. Havent actually tried to apply it to window yet tho!

mummyjaguar · 21/04/2008 13:04

we used brume and it looks fab.

also got some stuff on a roll and it was a bugger to cut it straight.

bluesky · 21/04/2008 14:30

Brume, very easy

you measure, it comes cut to size, easy to apply.

no mess, no cutting, no fiddly bits, no stressing!

lots of nice patterns to choose from

4 years on, it still looks as good as the day we put it on.

Look at Eclipse Window Films. Great products and price.
