our kitchen will be out of bounds while it is being gutted and refitted, so we can't use it for about 5 days, no sink and limited access probably to utility room just beyond where the fridge/freezer and w machine live... we don't have a microwave and will have to use bottled water to drink...any other tips/ideas for survival, what about the washing too ? eek...I hate any change or disruption...have just survived new bathroom which should give me confidence in my ability to cope ! TIA

Could you get a microwave? Ours was invaluable when we were in the same position, we cooked and froze lots of stuff in advance.

Buy lots of disposable stuff, from £ shop or similiar, not v eco-friendly but I think it's allowed in the circs! Paper towel, disposable plates, cutlery, cups.

Any washing up, do it in washing up bowl in bathroom.

Oh and maybe borrow a George foreman type grill, v useful too. Set up a little 'kitchen' in your living room.

Good luck, it will all be worth it!

thanks happy - I suppose we could ( get microwave) except that we'd never use it afterwards and doesn't seem worth it for a few days (I'm taking ds away for w/end to avoid 3 days - leaving poor dh here ) - have got paper plates/plastic cutlery and yes, will fill washing up bowl in bathroom...I suppose we can manage on a take away or two and cold ready to eat stuff from Sainsbury's (or M&S to cheer us!)- it's just that there's so little room here to put anything down. I know it'll be worth it - I just fret !

when ours was done, I had DH set up a little corner in the dining room with two old cupboards from the old kitchen and the old worksurface placed on top so I had somewhere to store the kettle, toaster and microwave etc. plus, I place the washing up bowl there too so I didn;t have to traipse up n down stairs all day to wash things up (DD1 and DD2 were 3 & 1 at that point so stair gates were everywhere).

if you don;t want to get a microwave do you someone you could barrow off, or even borrow a camping stove so you can at least make beans on toast/eggs on toast ect???

get a microwave off freecycle

go out to cafes / get fish and chips

at work i have had no kicten for 4 months (and counting) washing up in the TINY sic=k in dowsnatiars loo...

whilst washing machine is plumbed in now we had no w/m for 4 weeks (with a 2 and 5 year old)... stuff went next door to be washed

nobodysfool · 18/04/2008 08:57

I could run up the road to friend with frozen dinner and ask her to blast it in microwave for m,e !

use paper plates, v cheap from Tesco

wash all the clothes that are dirty, get your friend to wash some clothes for you whilst work going on or can do little things by hand in bathroom sink

are you sure you can't drink your water from you bathroom sink tap (I drink mine)

get your kettle upstairs, make sure you make them lots of tea, don't let them do it themselves as my kettle ended up in a pile of rubble!

if you have a freestanding fridge, you might plug it in to a socket in another room

go out for dinner (supermarket cafe so not to break the bank), get packets of sandwiches for lunch (also cheap in Tesco)

be prepared for an overrun!

MaryAnnSingleton · 18/04/2008 16:55

no can't drink bathroom tap water as it's not direct from outside...

OP posts:
nannyL · 18/04/2008 17:48

does it sit in a tank then...

just wondering how your bathroom tap could not come from the mains?

MaryAnnSingleton · 18/04/2008 20:19

yes, cold water tank for upstairs, kitchen direct from mains

now you mention it...

there is the same set up at my dads house (where i lived for 25 years)

we were oftne told not relaly to drink the water in the bathroom but i always did and am still alive
... no way woudl i go downstairs for a glass of water in the night, always from the bathroom tap.

also in the loft we could seee in to it and there were always bits of mank limescale floating on the top

but anyway i drank it for 20+ years and had no ill effects what so ever

(it was also the tastiest water in the house IMO)

maidamess · 18/04/2008 23:09

Yes get a microwave, and poss a sandwich toaster! Paper plates are a great idea...I am speaking from experience as my new kitchen has just been fitted...bending over the bath washing the dirty dishes soon loses its appeal.

We lived on beans on toast, ready meals and take aways and the kindness of friends who took pity on us.

Good luck, its horrible but def, worth it in the end!

elfinblast · 19/04/2008 00:00

Eat out or takeaways (2 sodding months I was unable to use my entire downstairs).

Maybe you could ask good friends and family if you could all come for tea and promise to return the favour when you get yourself sorted.

MaryAnnSingleton · 19/04/2008 08:29

thanks alll..good advice !
