Wet vacuum cleaner. Hate or a must have?

We have just moved into a house and 4 beds, a sitting room and all the landing are in carpetts. They don't look too bad. A bit tired. Not what I would have but we don't have money to ditch them yet.

I wanted to give them a good clean. Also with little kids in the house we keep having incidents which will probably proof to be fatal on a carpet 😬

Shall I buy a big bulky wet carpet cleaner? Which one? Or will I hate it after 5 min? It is a 3 storey house with stairs… not huge huge but I suppose so isn't my patience

Why don't you hire a Rug Doctor for a day? That's what I do regularly

We have a Domestic Rug Doctor. You have to have somewhere to store it, it is really good and leaves the carpet very dry compared to others I have had in the past, I originally had a Vax 25 years ago, then a Bissell, then this Rug Doctor for the last 2 years. There is a chap on youtube who reviews all vacuum cleaners and carpet washers (ibaisic is his channel name.)

The main thing is you have to do it slowly, so for mine I tip and roll it forward, then slowly pull it backwards, you can see this on the video too. It takes time and it is heavy ish and cumbersome. If you don't have patience maybe hire someone to come in and do it. Grin

Thank you for your comments.
I think I'm underestimating the effort it would take to clean the whole house. And after watching YouTube videos I also see where the price from a professional cleaner comes from!

I will think again. Maybe we will get a spot washer to keep things in order if there are accidents but altogether I won't cash out 300£ for a new appliance I might only use once in my life.

Spot Washers are under £200 on QVC and I'm sure you can find them cheaper on Amazon or AOL etc .

I have a Vax Platinum carpet washer , they are noisy and bulky to store and the carpet does take a while to dry so we use it in the evening and let the de humidifier run overnight .
It is hard work and takes ages I usually shampoo then rinse then make my DS do the boring bit of going back'n;forth to draw out as much water as he can.

Your best bet is get them cleaned professionally as suggested above then keep on top of the inevitable spills .
My DD spills coffee on the carpet <sigh>

Theres a Dr Beckman cleaner with a brush attached , my Dad used it on the carpet in front of their sofa , it lifted a ground in stain that I thought was welded on !

I bought a rug doctor carpet cleaner and it's been great. There is an amount of effort needed in doing it and I'm not sure I'd attempt a whole 4 bed house with it but it's been worth every penny! I've cleaned the car upholstery with it and various different things in the house - office chair, sofa etc - bit of a game changer!! I bought it when we was in a rental some years ago and the carpets were in a bit of a state, they came up new. Friends have also used it and commented how brilliant it is.
