I'm dreading telling dh

babypowder · 17/04/2008 17:53

I pay £70/month for our Victorian 3-bed terrace. It's extortionate

cazzybabs · 17/04/2008 17:54

Yes ours was over £300 pounds. they reackon it is going to be worse next winter.

littlefrog · 17/04/2008 18:03

at that kind of price, if you own your own house, it might be worth getting a new boiler?
we had to get a new one last year, and our monthly bill is currently £29/month (our predecessor, 3 years ago (ie before the big price rises), was spending £90!) We have insulated the roof properly as well, which has made a MASSIVE difference.
ours is a 4 bed victorian semi, and it's definitely not super-insulated/sealed (howling draughts through some windows/doors, despite our efforts) so I think this must be due to the boiler.

I win
£546

warmsummersday · 17/04/2008 18:18

We had our boiler serviced last year along with all the rads cleaned out and thought this would make a difference but it hasn't. the boiler is really old. OH says we can't afford new windows and i don't know how we can compromise as i want to have a warmish house when im here but he wants to cut down on fuel bills.

Shell delivers our gas (LPG) in a big tanker. It costs about £650 to fill our tank and if we had the heating on all day (like many of my friends seem to) it would only last a month. As it is, we only heat two floors of the house for 3 hours morning & same again in the evening (thermostat just below 20). When it's really cold we light fires and wear more sweaters! We have 3 or 4 tank deliveries a year.

LPG has always been expensive but mains gas is catching up fast.

warmsummersday · 17/04/2008 18:33

Ok so can we all post how long we have our heating on for each day please? I am going to show OH this post when he comes home at the weekend.

mine was just over £200 for 3.5 months. We don't have a gas cooker and its not on all day. We only have 6 radiators on and double glazing. I think we will all just have to wear coats inside.

LyraSilvertongue · 17/04/2008 18:38

Just under £300 a quarter in the winter. We have the heating on a lot as we're at home most of the time and a gas cooker.

LyraSilvertongue · 17/04/2008 18:39

On a really cold day the heating would be on all day, other days just in the morning and evening. And not at all in the summer, obviously.

LyraSilvertongue · 17/04/2008 18:42

Ours is only a two-bed semi. Double glazed but still draughty due to poor window fitters leaving gaps in the frames.

beansmum · 17/04/2008 18:45

I don't put the heating on, only if I am out at night (for the babysitter), but my water is heated by gas and my cooker is gas. I pay £30 a month by direct debit and usually get some back at the end of the year.

hana · 17/04/2008 18:48

don't people pay each month? we pay £40 each month, build up a credit in the summer and use it in the winter

Roskva · 17/04/2008 18:54

Ours was £83 for February alone (stone victorian terrace with a draughty 70s 2 storey extension). We've had the extension wall cavities filled, replaced the worst windows, and the heating bill is still huge .

snorkle · 17/04/2008 19:15

We have gas hob and water heated by gas and gas central heating (small 4 bed det house). We pay £31 per month, using more in winter, less in summer. Central heating is on for an hour in the mornings and 4-10pm at night (longer at weekends), but only when it's really cold - it's been pretty much off since March.

our gas is £9 a quarter as we only really have the hob off it and the electric £150 per quarter. we rarely have the heating on as we have two logburners and use the waste wood from OHs work. it is 5 bed detached old house and does get a bit nippy upstairs in the morning but we do shut all the doors to rooms we dont use and the heat from the logburners goes upstairs and warms the childrens rooms.
do you have a fireplace where you could fit a logburner, after seeing how much your bills are i will certainly not be complaining about it being cold in the morning anymore.

CoffeeMad · 21/04/2008 13:49

Ours is £50 a month and am always in arrears. The house is a modern build (6 years old) 3 bed detatched!!

expatinscotland · 21/04/2008 13:50

£364 for about 85% of the LPG tank.

schneebly · 21/04/2008 13:51

No idea how much as we don't pay it

Mamazon · 21/04/2008 13:51

3 bed terrace - £472.

it's a sore subject at the moment

Fimbo · 21/04/2008 13:53

We have just had one for the last quarter - £195. We are changing suppliers, which is why we don't currently pay by dd.

House is 5 bed, new build on 3 floors.
