What do you do with your orchids once they stop flowering?

I've got three plants that look very healthy but have lost their flowers. I'm not very sure what to do with them.

I need to replace them with flowering orchids as they look great in my console table... but can't bear to just compost the others. Any thoughts?

Keep looking after them. They'll flower again, eventually

EtonMessy · 27/08/2024 10:03

As PP says , keep them as they’ll flower again. We’ve had the same plants for a few years now and the flowers still come back . Just be patient and continue to look after them !

Calypsocuckoo · 27/08/2024 10:03

I cut off the stalk, and then stick it on a windowsill somewhere, water it every few weeks, and then you get a new stalk, mine seem to flower twice a year, and the flowers last for ages. If you got another new one flowering now, you could swop them over when that one is over.

TR888 · 27/08/2024 10:03

Will they? And where do you keep them in the meantime, can they go somewhere colder like a cellar that has some reasonable sunlight?

I keep them in the same place they're in the rest of the time.

Benign neglect is the answer for orchids, the moment I start looking after it the fucker dies. Cut the stalk off and move it to a window sill elsewhere then replace on console table with a new one and you can rotate them in and out of use depending on flower status

EtonMessy · 27/08/2024 10:06

Ours stay on the window sill all year round ! Why do you want to hide them away in a cellar? !!

Redcrayons · 27/08/2024 10:10

Cut the dead bits off and they’ll grow more flowers.
I only water mine once a week, sometimes less if I forget about it.

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 27/08/2024 10:12

They like warm, moist air, so a bathroom windowsill is ideal.

After having the same situation with an orchid which hadn’t flowers in years but was still green and healthy, I took all the orchid bark from the bottom of my orchids and stuck the roots in a pot full of water. The thing has not stopped flowering.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 27/08/2024 10:20

Chop the stem to just above a bump, stick it at the back of the kitchen windowsill (cool, north facing) and forget about it other than an occasional dunk in water.

elastamum · 27/08/2024 10:24

Water once a week with a few drops of orchid food. Cut off the stem that has flowered. Leave on a windowsill. They will bloom again. Mine have been flowering for years

Greekcatmug · 27/08/2024 10:27

Mine has done really well. I soak the whole pot in rainwater once a week let it drain and it seems to like it.

TheMousePipes · 27/08/2024 10:27

Replant them in a glass vase so you can see the roots. Make sure there’s always a cm of water at the bottom (the roots will reach down the right amount and help themselves). Otherwise ignore them. When they shoot a new flower spur give them a drink with orchid feed in it. They should flower twice a year like this. Mine live on the windowsill in the front room

Orchids really like bathrooms, my mother in law keeps hers in there and they thrive like billy-o

TR888 · 27/08/2024 12:36

Thank you so much for all your ideas! I shall keep them until they flower again 🙂
