If you rotate your kids summer to winter clothes, do you thin out as you pack away or when you get it back out?

I'm a bit of a hoarder to be mild. I'm working on that and making lots of good progress.

I'm going to start packing away some of my daughters summer clothes. She is my youngest so the only one with too many clothes still. I won't put everything away but I do need to put a lidded box worth under her bed to make room for some bulky winter bits in her wardrobe.

So when do you think out kids seasonal clothes. I did it as I unpacked for this summer and dd tried on the things that looked small and we donated it or Vinted it while people could still use out of it. I'm not 100% sure what will fit her next year, but I know what she didn't wear at all this year.

I'm not buying her clothes any more until she really needs them btw. There's no shopping for a winter wardrobe. She hasn't grown much in the last two years

It gives two chances for review.
If it's clearly too small/ only just fitting/ worn out and won't be good for next year, weed it out now.

Some things may be more borderline on fitting next year, so a review then, plus seeing things in a new light when they've not been in use will highlight what needs clearing and replacing.

Needs and interest change with time too.
Starting school was a gear change in needing fewer casual clothes because of school uniform. Sometimes they can have a maturity spurt and their tastes change quickly too.

Thin out when taking the clothes back out as don't know how much they will grow.

unlikelychump · 26/08/2024 12:02

Agree. Both.

IncessantNameChanger · 26/08/2024 12:14

Yes her tastes are changing. She hasn't worn anything sparkly this year but insists she still loves a lot of those things. Even though she grew about 1cm from last summer to this summer, lots of her shorts was too small in the rise. I'm hoping she is filling out for a much overdue growth spurt as she is ten but just fitting 8-9 clothes. She was in 7-8 for years and that's half the issue. Tonnes of 7-8 items that I have mostly weeded out.

I might just rid of anything that looked a bit on the small side this year or tatty then tackle the rest next spring. Dd hates trying on loads at once which is a pain. Having less to try on next spring would be a bonus.

Both!

Iloveshihtzus · 26/08/2024 12:21

Both , as the first person mentioned, I don’t repack stained, too worn, too small clothes. When I get them out again next year, I see what still fits.

Glamorous24 · 26/08/2024 12:27

Yes, I weed out at beginning and end of each season. If something is going to be too small by next year I take it out straightaway as we’re not going to use it again and means I can either pass on to another child who can use it in the current season or Vinted.

my DD is constantly growing though so we’re lucky if we get as much as two seasons out of her things.

i keep a box in the wardrobe of things that are either to grow into (hand me downs etc) or we think will still fit next year.

Our DS was tiny for a long time, having been born prem. Throughout secondary, he was 2 years behind in trouser sizes. Tops were similar, a particular circumstance means I can chart one growth spurt very specifically. 10 days before school started back he tried the previous years shirts on for size, all fine. First day back at school, all too tight round the collar 🤣 Luckily I was already in possession of shirts in next size up.

It’s very difficult to predict what will fit your DD next summer OP. I definitely found that some stuff fitted for ages and it sounds like you can figure out what those items might be

IncessantNameChanger · 26/08/2024 13:06

I have got all the summer bits out on her bed so I will get rid of what is obviously not going to be much good next year. It's really hard to imagine her having a growth spurt though

Apart from a couple of pairs of shorts all their clothes are layers so no difference. Just jumpers on top of the same tops and leggings added under dresses. Never had so many clothes for myself or DC that that need moving around.

exprecis · 26/08/2024 13:08

Both.

Also I do a total empty of my kids clothes drawers every few months to make sure I get everything.

Cottagecheeseisnotcheese · 26/08/2024 13:10

children on average at her age grow 4-6cm per year but it's not smooth so if she only grew 1cm last year she is due a spurt. Don't put anything away that's tight stained, damaged or on it's last legs those that fit comfortably this year put away and review in the spring

Blackberriesandcobwebs · 26/08/2024 13:10

I waited until they came back out as growth spurts were sporadic and snuck up at the most inconvenient and expensive times! 🤣

Idontevenknowmyname · 26/08/2024 13:15

Like others, I do both. Get rid of anything obviously tatty or small now, then review again when we get to next spring. If it still fits, even if not worn much this year, I tend to hang on to it in case next year it does appeal.
Currently trying to work out what to do with DD14 who has stopped growing, has a wardrobe stuffed full and insists she likes it all! I need some storage boxes I think!

I've got 4 kids so there is sharing of drawers and wardrobes. Box room isn't up to storage for a adult teen entire belongings unfortunately. My boys each have a wardrobe and two drawers.

I've done a decent thin out of this summers things and also unpacked all the winter stuff and thinned that. Everything back in the drawers and the storage box is now empty so that's good enough. I think there's more summer stuff to wash and put away so I might have another look the week they go back to school. Big bag ready for charity now so that's made room for school return.
