Laundering kids clothes - yellow stains

Anyone know of any tips/tricks/wonder products to clean those yellow stains my dc always seems to create around the collar line of clothes?

Tried a generic stain remover which did absolutely nothing. No clue what to try next. I just wash and wash and it never comes out😟

Should be pic attached to illustrate what I'm talking about.

Look up Nancy Birtwhistle on Facebook or Instagram. She will have the answer.

Thanks, she seems to like putting things in a plastic bag overnight. Might just put every product I can think of on it, leave overnight then wash

What is the yellow stain? I would rub in a load of fairy liquid (green) and leave until you wash the item. Gets most stains out.

mena78 · 24/08/2024 16:37

No idea I think probably milk. I've soaked it in water, washing up liquid and bicarbonate of soda. Will put through a wash again tomorrow and see how it goes

We never had any stains like that, but most things have come out with a good rub of washing up liquid and then pegging out in the sunlight.

Suncream was the culprit for staining DS's necklines. Nothing ever got it out, apart from bleaching. We were recommended a suncream which wouldn't do it and haven't had the problem since.

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 24/08/2024 16:46

Suncream did this to two of my tops and I usually know how to deal with stains, but nothing dealt with this discolouration.

RandomUsernameHere · 24/08/2024 16:48

You could try hanging it out in the sun, that gets rid of a lot of stains.

Mmr224 · 24/08/2024 17:07

Try bicarb and white vinegar?

mena78 · 24/08/2024 17:32

I was thinking white vinegar but have none in, if this fails I'll go out and get some. Will definitely try hanging out if sunny tomorrow 🤞🏻

Try bicarb and white vinegar?

That's a myth, they cancel each other out, acid & base.

Cookerhood · 24/08/2024 20:34

This is Nancy's advice

Pink stuff stain remover cheap vegan and will even remove curry/turmeric stains 😃

mena78 · 25/08/2024 08:23

The overnight bicarb/washing up liquid hasn't worked so leaving it out in the sun today while I go and get some different products. Definitely not sun cream I do think milk.

It's milk staining I think, those are baby/toddler clothes?

I find some generic stain remover spray like Vanish and then leave out in the sun, the UV breaks down the stains. It doesn't need to be bright sunlight. Cloudy or even overnight (moonlight) works too.

mena78 · 25/08/2024 16:22

Yes, toddler.

Think this is the best I'm going to get to be honest. Went over again with a pink stain remover, left a couple of hours and re washed. Still a bit of a mark but better than before.

Thanks all

Do you have any bar soap in? Dettol or the likes (the one for bodies not laundry).

Wet the stain and rub the bar soap on so it leaves a layer of soap on. Leave it overnight and wash again.

I use the laundry bar (if you have that, even better), but normal soap works well too.

mena78 · 25/08/2024 16:47

I do actually have a couple of posh soaps in the drawer just sitting there. Might give that a try tonight. Worth a shot! Thanks

Would mund sharing which suncream was recommended, please? Sun cream wrecks all of my kids' clothes!

I made a paste with vanish and water (tells you the ratio on the side) and left it on for 10 minutes then washed. Got out blood and tomato stains. Worth a shot.

mena78 · 26/08/2024 10:18

Great news the soap worked! Thanks @isthismylifenow Smile

Sunscreen stains like that, but the stain does not appear until it has been laundered. So by the time you notice it it is too late, because the laundering sets the stain. Full fat milk can sometimes act the same way.

The solution IME is to apply oxygen bleach before laundering - apply to all collars, and anywhere you suspect may have been contaminated with sunscreen or milk. It's not going to do any harm if there isn't any sunscreen or milk on the garment (as long as it's not silk or wool).
