Filthy toilet bowl

My son has just moved I to a rental - it's generally nice but the toilet bowl is full of brown limescale/god knows what! Can one of help? I moved into a house with similar years ago and ended up chiselling it off with a knife!

Try white vinegar and loads of elbow grease ( you not the product) might have to chisel too.

AnonyMoi · 23/08/2024 10:30

You can try with Hydrochloric acid also known as salfuman. You must be very careful handling it, though, because it's highly corrossive.

Harpic descaler left on over night. Repeat until the lime scale is dissolved.

If you chisel with a knife you damage the surface which ultimately makes the build up worse.

LlamaNoDrama · 23/08/2024 10:32

Try a limescale remover for saniflo systems. Pour in leave a few hours.

Aposterhasnoname · 23/08/2024 10:32

Empty out as much water as you can with a cup then chuck loads of black harpic down and leave for as long as possible. Repeat if necessary and chisel off any stubborn bits.

Gloves and plastic scouring pad. Then HG Limescale Super Gel Concentrate remover. Rinse. Repeat. It goes eventually.

Citric acid and hot, not boiling, water. Leave as long as possible and repeat

Empty out what you can, line the bowl with loo paper or toilet roll, soak the paper with white vinegar. Leave for as long as you can. Remove paper (don't flush, especially if kitchen roll,) flush then clean and if needed, have another go with vinegar.

You can also get spray limescale removers, which are basically acidic, but vinegar is much cheaper.

If you're using strong acids, as suggested above - it should work, and more quickly. But this is how my mother burnt the bathroom floor - it spat back.

Do not mix bathroom chemicals unless you are a chemist and know exact what they'll do. Chemical reactions can cause fire, chemical burns, noxious fumes...

We had amazing success using Harpic limescale removing toilet cleaner and Bloo anti-limescale fizzy block things. Literally went from brown stuck on limescale to the cleanest toilet you've ever seen, and I'd already tried the emptying out scraping method! Good luck

GinBooksChocs · 23/08/2024 10:53

Second citric acid!

BloodyAdultDC · 23/08/2024 10:53

Harpic toilet blocks. Use a couple at a time. Miraculous.

Thereafter harpic loo stuff, a couple of squirts a couple of times a week. I seldom buy any branded cleaning products but these I swear by.

filthy scratters that lived in this house before me

Thanks all! I will pass on - son was keen to try something 😁

Citric acid. Look up Nancy Birthwhistle recipe for toilet cleaner she calls Pure Magic. It is excellent.

Citric acid

CrotchetyQuaver · 26/08/2024 14:27

Black harpic liquid cleaner and their overnight descaler tabs for under water line. And in any other forms it comes in. Of course he'll need a loo brush to scrub it with too.

I second this.

But if they can't be arsed making the cleaner, just a load of citric acid plus hot (not boiling) water would also work.
