Is a Dyson hoover worth it?

DYIDIY · 22/08/2024 12:53

Fed up with my massive and heavy hoover that I have to carry around and plug in around the house. I think I am ready for an easy to use wireless one but I need something powerful as I have a cat and a DC so lots of hair, food etc on the floor all the time. I have hard floors if that helps.
Is a Dyson worth it? and if so, which one? I am happy to spend the money if it's really great and will last many years.

No.

Kipperthedawg · 22/08/2024 12:56

No. They're are awful.

Get a roomba! Mine goes upstairs in the morning and I put it downstairs in the evening. Stairs get a go over with a small cheap hand held hoover once a week.

Ambleen · 22/08/2024 12:56

No, they are poor quality and do not last long. Dyson customer service was woeful.

SleepingisanArt · 22/08/2024 13:18

I have a Miele (cat and dog one) with a 10m lead on the plug. It's not heavy and has great suction (so much so that I use the 'quiet' setting so that it doesn't just stick to the floor!) I have hard floors and rugs. It copes with both - I do have quite a few accessories including a parquet floor head (excellent for the hard floors) and a turbo head which makes doing the 'shaggy' rugs a breeze.

Gratchet · 22/08/2024 13:20

Nope. My Dyson broke and I got a nice clunky vac. Love it.

Dyson is made to be sleek and go around corners etc. it's not going to be powerful, really. The USP on all they're adds is how it goes under the sofa well.

Ohmychristmick · 22/08/2024 13:21

Miele by far the best.

The newest and very expensive Dysons are OK but they're high maintenance and need constant emptying and cleaning to work well.

Jeezitneverends · 22/08/2024 13:24

10 years ago I’d have said yes but I’m now a firm no.
my first one lasted about 15 years, to the point where the bristles were worn out and no longer hitting the carpet.
The next one lasted about 8 years
The cordless I replaced it with is a bloody temperamental nightmare! New battery a year ago -and the charge lasts 30seconds if you’re lucky -and I only use it on some hard floors downstairs!!

I just replaced it at the weekend with a cordless stick one from Aldi so we’ll see how that goes -it was £50!!

Readytoevolve · 22/08/2024 13:32

I far prefer a shark. Dyson is flimsy and terrible suction.

roses2 · 22/08/2024 13:34

No battery powered vacuum will ever be stronger than a mains powered vacuum.

But if you really want a battery powered one then the Dyson ones are one of the better ones that will last approx 1.5 years until the battery deteriorates.

PaminaMozart · 22/08/2024 13:35

No. Absolutely not.

Get a Henry if you want a workhorse.

Or a Miele if you want something 'sophisticated'.

QwestSprout · 22/08/2024 13:36

There's also Gtech - my first one lasted five years and they're repairable; literally every part of them you can buy (wheels/yoke/battery) for not very much.
Battery lasts about an hour and it has a powered push so for those of us who are disabled they're incredibly lightweight.

Georgethecat1 · 22/08/2024 13:38

A few years ago I would have said yes but they have gone down hill. We now have a Vax

Pixiedust1234 · 22/08/2024 13:41

No. The only cordless that actually picked up kitty litter was a hoover one. Dyson just ignored the litter.

I have bought many hoovers (due to a recent disability) and my favourites have been the hoover cordless for zipping around the trays and a corded lightweight Shark for everywhere else.

(mine has a purple stem but it's very similar to this)

(DD has long hair and this is anti wrap PLUS lightweight).

Try going on different websites and change the weight settings to find a decent lightweight corded which are a lot more powerful than cordless.

Wow, very surprised with all your replies! Thanks so much for all the suggestions, will have a look at each one

No, look at Shark.
I always had Dysons, I was a committed customer. But the prices a couple of years ago had gone up about £100 more than I had previously paid. So I put my foot down and got a cheapish lightweight Shark from Argos, delivered next day. So much better - it is corded, but the cord is longer, the hoover is lighter, it is designed for pet hair too, has a removable cylinder for hoovering the stairs. And I am not giving money to a Brexit financer who left the country for Asia and made a load of British people redundant recently. And who helps pay Finn Russell £1M.

TheCoolOliveBalonz · 22/08/2024 14:35

I had a Dyson animal in a 1 bed flat with laminate floors - was great. Totally useless in a 4 bed house unless perhaps you just want it for say the kitchen only. If house and assuming a lot of carpet, go Miele. You have the old fashioned bag and unit to carry about but it's light and fab. Do not get the massive upright Dysons - they way a tonne and are totally unnecessary.

Rory17384949 · 22/08/2024 14:47

No I wouldn't buy mine again. I think they were worth it years ago but they're flimsy now. I've heard shark are much better, that's what my SIL has and is pleased with it

As the username indicates I used to work there and my job was specifically testing various Dyson models against competitor products.

I can confirm they're pretty rubbish. I'd recommend a Shark every time!

I also wouldn't want to give James Dyson any of my money 🤣

SunshineAndFizz · 22/08/2024 15:40

I'm disappointed by ours - bought a couple of years ago and wish I'd got a different make. Anything larger than a grain of sand causes issues and gets spat out. And generally just not very good - have to go over the same spot multiple times to pick up visible fluff or hair.

Kungfoopanda · 22/08/2024 15:45

No, like PP we replaced ours with a meile cat & dog mini and it's a brilliant hoover and not very heavy at all. Would highly recommend!

Pollymollydolly · 23/08/2024 10:36

I have a dyson v8 and have found it really good - I have been meticulous in changing the filters and looking after it. I am thinking about getting a new one because it is getting on a bit now, I’ve already replaced the battery once. Disappointed to see people saying dyson quality has gone downhill.

I see lots of people recommending Miele, does anyone have a cordless model? I really can’t go back to corded so considering Miele but only a cordless!
