Mixed load at 60 degrees

I’m pushed for time and had to wash a few cotton tops in the washing machine, i decided to put a few bras in there too as i didn’t have any clean.

I’ve been unwell recently and wearing those t shirts throughout’ I decided to do a 60 degree wash which I know is okay for cotton; however the bras have got polyester in them and I’m worried that some melting may occur and affect my cotton clothing

any advice would be great and much appreciated. Thank you so much.

I initially joined Mumsnet as I used to date someone with children and this site helped me a lot.

I grew up in care and didn’t really have any guidance or support into adulthood so I hope it’s okay that I’m still part of this community as it’s a real comfort

I doubt anything bad will happen tbh but you won’t know until they come out!

anyone can be on mumsnet!

It’s an everyone welcome kind of place but like everywhere else it occasionally gets a bit gnarly- don’t let that put you off.

The bra won’t damage the T-shirt. The bra won’t last as long if it’s regularly washed that hot- it’s too vigorous a wash for it.

Personally I use vinegar or a splash of disinfectant in the wash rather than going hot.

I hope you feel better soon.

I think it will be fine. If anything they might shrink a little but that won't affect the cotton stuff.

I usually wash my clothes at 40 and my towels and bedding at 60.

You ask all the questions you want! There is always someone here.

tanstaafl · 12/08/2024 07:49

If you’re not reactive to it a 40c wash with biological powder would have been an alternative.

We wash almost everything at 30c, occasionally a 40c for underwear or grubby clothes from gardening say.

Look at the washing machine manual for instructions on how to stop a wash so you could’ve got your bras out.

Willmafrockfit · 12/08/2024 07:50

i do everything at 40
i look at the labels and hardly anythign has 60 on it

Rocknrollstar · 12/08/2024 08:12

We do clothes at 30 and bedding and towels at 49. Haven’t done anything hotter in years. Polyester in bras won’t melt. Personally I wouldn’t wash cotton tops in 60

TwistedSisters · 12/08/2024 12:29

The enzymes in washing powder work best at 40 so 40 is fine for all clothes.
I always do bedding at 60.
Polycotton potentially might shrink at 60 but I'm not sure!

Noseyoldcow · 12/08/2024 13:09

On a mixed wash, I wash everything at the coolest temperature on the labels. So if some garments say wash at 30, and the others are higher, I'd wash at 30. Never failed me yet!

Backtoanoldname · 12/08/2024 19:15

7.15 pm now. Catch it quickly and you can stop the wash cycle. Then you can restart it at a less worrying temperature.

As I write it won’t be at 60°c yet. But leave it longer it will be.

It was 6.50 in the morning she started her washing @Backtoanoldname Grin

Speed reading of times…..

So by now its all fine OR much is knackered.

Going forward, Invest in some bra laundry bags, one bra per bag and fling your bras in with the regular laundry guilt free - colour appropriate (just don't tumble dry them) Wash everything at 30°C.
