Anyone bought granite worktops online?

We want to replace the tiles and worksurfaces in the kitchen so we're looking at different options. Has anyone used an online firm who come and measure then come back and fit worktops? Or do you have any recommendations for places to buy worktops at a reasonable price? We're in the far SE.
Thanks.

Yes, I used Affordable Granite & Marble. They also fitted a Valleroy & Bosch sink & taps at the same time.

The actual granite & sink are really good & I'm very pleased, but I realised after they went that the fitting wasn't perfect (one cupboard door doesn't quite shut against the edge of the worktop, and there was a gap at one end, but didn't bother me due to position).

They were quite cheap compared with John Lewis but if I were you I wouldn't hand over the dosh till you've properly checked the fitting.

I used a company called wharf solid surfaces, they are based in midhurst sussex, and they came and measured up (with a super-whizzy laser measuring thingy). We went for Hi-Macs, (a type of corian) but I believe they do all sorts. There is a website, can't remember it, but you could google wharf solid surfaces.

I used a lovely company in Hampshire, they travel to London and were recommended to me. They are called Interior Stone and their no is 01420 521062

Ask for Nicky or Kelvin

They came up, templated and fitted my granite, they mounted my under worktop sink, did grooves for the draining board, did a window sill and huge shelf in my larder plus all worktop and upstands for £1750 ish IIRC

Swedish mum we used a lovely local (Maldon, Essex) portugese guy - he was mega reliable at half the price of all of the other people we had round to quote and was fine when we had to put him off coming to fit it a few times - I would deffo recommend him.

I would have to say though I would not buy it on the net - get them to come and measure and then if they bodge it they pay for it!

Thank you - lots of places to look at! One more question if you don't mind - do you have plain walls and an upstand at the back with a splashback or tiles in your kitchens? Have been nosing around friends' kitchens recently... Our walls are tiled at the moment and obviously if we're going for painted walls we'll need to get the plasterer in at the same time.

we have upstands and plastered wall painted in a flat oil paint so is scrubbable

I have new-plaster and paint on the walls, with just a 5 inch glass splashback/upstand all the way round. In burgundy. I don't have sockets inthe walls either, I have 2 pop-ups that fit in the worktops and have 3 sockets each. They sit (nearly) flush when not in use. I don't have ANYTHING on the worktops (except a lovely glass burgundy fruit bowl) and I can properly clean it, and it is not cluttered.

I'm going to get some quotes today. I think paint/upstand would look better and as we're having the Artex skimmed plastering could be done at the same time. Thanks for the ideas.

There is a company who will 'cover' your existing worktops with a sort of granite overlay. I looked at them for mine, but I wanted 50mm thick and they couldn't do it, but they seemed ok. It's called Granite Transformations or somesuch.
