Post holiday washing

Hello, after a lovely beach holiday in the sun how do you manage all the post holiday washing? We are a family of 4, with 2 young children, so lots of sandy, sweaty, messy, suncream, ice cream spills ect. So extra dirty laundry. No tumble dryer at home either.
Thanks

I put everything in the washing machine, add my usual detergent, softener & antibacterial gel and then turn it on, once it's washed, I hang it either outside or inside depending on the weather. I might chuck some stain removal powder in for particularly messy items... Does sand or suncream require additional measures?

Keep an eye on the forecast and get as much done as you can on a dry day. You could also use an indoor airer, and a dehumidifier if you have one.

Alternatively, bring laundered clothes to a laundrette to be tumble dried or use one of the big ones available at garages etc. I have heard that some people put all sorts into the public ones so I'd bring it all to a laundrette for peace of mind.

Pre treat stains, then wash, it’s good drying weather today and tomm

We divide it up before we get home - a suitcase for unworn clothes (there are always unworn clothes!), toiletries, holiday inflatables etc, and one for dirty laundry. Then when we get home we just cycle through it - darks, lights, towels last (as we're less likely to need beach towels quickly than underwear).

If it's not raining you can stick it on an airer outside which will dry it quickly. You can get four loads done in two days relatively easily - one first thing (or overnight) one in the early afternoon.

Hope for some dry weather and crack on! Little kids stuff doesn’t take up much space. I prioritise things that we wear most often when we’re at home and leave holiday specific stuff until last.

TheSecretIsland · 04/08/2024 15:48

Take it to the launderette, either get it collected at the hotel so all clean when I pack or take it to the local one when I get home.

Worthwhile cost that I include in our holiday budget.

Only time I'd consider doing it would be if the weather was guaranteed to be sunny and dry

Scottishskifun · 04/08/2024 15:49

Packing cubes!
Means we separate out the dirty washing from clean stuff before we fly home then straight into the washing machine.
It's typically 2 loads so keep an eye on the weather forecast and hope its good.

We tend to fly from London then visit family so tend to be able to get the 2 loads on and dry in 1 day.

I take it all to a laundrette on holiday and get a service wash the day before I come back. The can’t begin to tell you how good it is not to have suitcases full of dirty washing when you come home.

dementedpixie · 04/08/2024 15:55

We go to a villa on holiday and then I wash most of the clothes before we come home as the weather is better for drying it there

MtClair · 04/08/2024 15:55

Start with items that we need quickly - aka underwear’s, T-shirts.
Make my way as I can for the rest.

Tbh in summer, everything dries outside. I usually have two machine worth in the washing line that all dries before the end of the day.

2AND2GC · 04/08/2024 15:56

I seperate out the laundry into washing loads when I'm packing to come home - whites, darks, colours, 'hand wash' and get stuck in.

Aldi washing liquid plus Vanish powder

Get each load hung up and ironed whilst still just slightly damp and hung on hangers to air off.

If you're short of drying space buy an extra airer. Even if you use it rarely it's so worth having to save your bacon at times like this.

Prontehpronto · 04/08/2024 16:02

Take all to the laundrette and do a service wash and dry. If you have anything delicate or maybe the whites just do those at home 😊

Nsky62 · 04/08/2024 21:04

I only ever take hand luggage, always too many clothes!

A long time ago, if I went away with my ex and sons, and away for more than a week, wash there, always mixed up everyone’s clothes too, in case suitcase went missing

CheeseWisely · 04/08/2024 21:06

Service wash & dry. A friend of mine goes as far as dropping it off still in the suitcase (removing wash bags etc first obviously)
