Hello i have just had a letter from e.on energy saying that they are sending someone round to check the safety of my electricity and gas meter .

In all my years of living i have never heard of an energy company sending someone round just to check to make sure the meter is in a safe position. Even when i was a child i don't remember this ever happening. The position of the meters has never ever changed . The letter says they want to make sure the area around the meter is safe ? what exactly does this mean ? Do they want me to rearrange my furniture and what is the criteria for safety

Has anyone else had this sort of visit and should i be concerned ?

No but being a cynic, I suspect they want to move you onto a smart meter. Before we switched, we definitely had something from our provider about how our meter was “out of date” and needed to be upgraded, when the bazillion offers to put in a smart meter received no response.

Yes definitely this, energy companies are under pressure to get their customers to change to smart meters .

This is bollocks.

Have you any idea the possibilities if everyone were smart.

Take your electric car charging comment. If an energy company can see when you charge your car, they can look for the cheapest energy at that time and charge you on that price with a small uplift. Prices can be flexible and vary by half - hour. They could even ask you to leave your car plugged in when your home and THEY choose when to start the charge based on when the price is cheapest.

Never mind all the other smart electrical gadgets that could be utilised similarly.

We will see...

sausawyee · 27/07/2024 14:22

We got this and we have smart meters. I ignored it as have never had this before.

sausawyee · 27/07/2024 14:24

I don't understand the fear of smart meters. What is it that people think they do?

BaronessEllarawrosaurus · 27/07/2024 14:26

I like my smart meters. I definitely like the extra information I can access on usage. I'm also benefitting from the half price electricity during certain times. I didn't benefit much from the energy saving times during winter but I'm enjoying getting all my washing and drying done during these summer ones.

I live in a block of flats and all the meters are in a box next to each other. The signals to the home hub thing don't work. Also they can switch you onto different tariffs and prepay.

My 'fear' is of losing pay or holiday on a low wage to be in for an appointment for something I don't need. If my employer was required to give me unpaid leave and the energy company to pay me £100 wages to stay in for the day then fair enough.

Pinkfluffypencilcase · 27/07/2024 14:38

I think it's a con to for e switch to smart meter.
Agree with gamer chick - anyone hard selling like a double glazed salesman is not for our benefit.

It's a visual safety check. What is that exactly?!

The original meters are still working and will continue to do so for awhile yet. It's a trick.

So you don't want cheap, truly renewwable energy for the planet then?

How selfish.

What has that got to do with having a smart meter? You can go for green energy whatever type of meter you have, although they can't in reality separate the 'green' energy from the rest so effectively you get the same as everyone else.. The smart meters will eventually allow companies to charge more for peak energy, fair enough if you can avoid peak times but that's not always possible you have to eat at sensible times for children and shower early in the morning or evening time.

Currently there are also huge problems with smart meters, giving wrong readings, or failing completely causing all sorts of problems, and not being compatible between suppliers. They are just not reliable enough (yet), maybe in a few years time.

This is seriously old news and hasn't been the case for at least 5 years since energy companies started rolling out the new generation of smart meters.

Exactly, having a smart meter (or NOT) has naff-all to do with 'renewable energy' and 'saving the planet.' 😂 What a load of utter rot!

Are you OK @Punkrockprincess??? You sound rather confused dear. And somewhat angry. Flowers Do you work for a large energy company? Are they giving you a bonus if you con convince people into changing to smart meters?

Good luck with that hun! 😄 Hell will freeze over before I have one! Nice try though... 3/10.

Funny I keep reading about current problems on other forums. One thread I follow started to report problems in 2022 and is still reporting problems now. And many people still have the first generation meters. So it's old and current news. A quote from March this year, 'almost 4 million smart meters not working properly' https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cz9zqn77ezno

i dont want a smart meter as im happy with what i have now . I'm not sure why this position isnt acceptable. I'm very capable of taking a reading and sending it to the company
i also am not happy that the best deals are only available if you have a smart meter. Does anyone know of companies that have good fixed rate deals that you don't need a smart meter ?

Octopus energy

Say that out loud and it's like a klaxon summoning a flurry of referral codes.

Tumbleweed101 · 28/07/2024 15:44

I've got an old prepayment meter. It has helped me out when they raise the prices because I've been able to top up as much as I can afford just before the increase and then be able to save longer for until I need to get more. The tarrif only changes when you next top up. This is likely another reason they push smart meters.

I'm not in any hurry. It'll stress me knowing boiling the kettle is 50p or taking a shower is a £1. I don't over use now so I wouldn't be able to reduce it much anyway.

It causes extra admin work hence the higher prices.

There's a regulatory obligation on suppliers to check meters every two years, so this does happen especially with far fewer meter readers these days. It's a safety check mainly, but no harm in checking with supplier as suggested earlier.

Since when? I have been in my house over 30 yes and never been contacted to have an inspection, until today.

I don't fear them,I just don't want one. It's lovely of my supplier to inform me of the great benefits to me having one,but after I have made clear I don't want one thanks, why the constant pestering by them ,you know,if it's purely for my benefit...?
