Currently having a sort out and being ruthless. There are, however, things I can't throw away - such as cards/letters from special people, and all the lovely art and notes my kids have done over the years.

How can I effectively store these - would be interested in people's solutions.

Take photos of them

Either a plastic box with a lid or could use an expanding folder?

We have a very unglamorous box of "favourite things".

If you wanted to you could have a box with those cardboard document wallets one for each year?

Take photos of them

This, then bin.

Under bed plastic storage box here… I do need to be more ruthless though.

Kept "special" birthday cards, everything else gone. My kids are adults and have zero interest in any of it

A few years ago I saw advice to photograph with a date stamp all art works and then havethe photographs made into photo books. Chuck the art in the recycling Genius advice. Wish I’d seen it before my loft became a fire hazard with all the stored papers. Although by child 3 I don’t think I kept much that they brought home…

I agree with the take photos and then bin approach. Maybe a small box to keep the very special things. I binned everything my parents had kept, apart from a couple of letters. They didn't want my art from when I was 6 and neither did I. Friends have done the same.

DesdamonasHandkerchief · 09/07/2024 13:21

Recently done the same, I bought three portfolio art cases and kept the best stuff, one portfolio for each child, stacked on top of each other in the loft.
Given they're all now in their 20's it was easier to be less sentimental about what was worth keeping!
I'm sure when I'm gone they'll chuck them all out anyway!
