All New Kitchen Stuff - Recommendations Please?

LondonGrimmer · 07/07/2024 22:38

We're almost at the end of having our new kitchen done. We've got new flooring, new spotlights, whole new kitchen with new appliances etc and now need to go shopping for the following, so looking for recommendations?

  • crockery (currently using 12 year old chipped white IKEA stuff).
  • cutlery
  • chopping boards
  • mugs (maybe. Not a priority).
  • glasses
  • knife block (using 12 year old Sabattier set).
  • tea towels and oven gloves
  • roasting tins

Don't want super cheap or very expensive, just somewhere in between. Been looking at Joseph Joseph chopping board sets but am not sold. Also Next/Dunelm for crockery and tea towels. Never sure if TK Maxx or Outlet Villages are good value for things like cutlery and kitchen accessories?

Has anyone been impressed with something they've bought fairly recently?

Thanks!

I bought a baking sheet with slightly higher sides that normal from sainsburys and it's actually really good!! Bought a year ago and still looks new! I quite like the sainsbirys homeward stuff though, the mid range price stuff I think is both affordable and durable (except bloody tin openers!). My kitchen bits get a lot of use and have help up fairly well over the last couple years.

PinotDragon · 08/07/2024 16:28

Sainsburys homeware **

Get the knives sharpened and have an integrated block put inside a drawer so you get rid of anything on the counter. You can get really shallow knife drawers that fit inside a deep pan drawer. They had that in a rental I was in and I loved it.

I’ve just bought a stupidly expensive wooden chopping board from John Lewis and it’s many times nicer than the machine washable plastic ones I had. It’s very strokable!

CyanideShake · 08/07/2024 16:34

For things like tin openers, cheese graters etc. I tend to go for Oxo Good Grips.

Hereallweek · 08/07/2024 16:35

I've had some nice kitchen stuff from Homesense (the home arm of TK Maxx). Either spendy brands a bit cheaper or random stuff I didn't know I needed, eg a nice sink tidy. You do need to rummage a bit though.

Failing that, the John Lewis kitchen department is my happy place. Everything I've bought from there has been excellent quality and it's very soothing to wander around.

I really like procook for oven trays, pots and pans and knives. Not sold on their chopping boards though and I’ve been scouring the web for some new ones but just not seen anything I like that’s worth the money.

Toooldtoworry · 08/07/2024 16:40

We have a pro cook outlet near us and we bought some bits from there.

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 08/07/2024 16:49

I love my Denby crockery, for everyday use. Made in England too. I went for the same shapes, but different designs, so they co-ordinate, not a matching set. They have a sale on at the moment and I have a mixture of perfect and seconds and can't tell the difference.

CyanideShake · 08/07/2024 16:49

Nisbet's website is great for all things kitchenware.

Talipesmum · 08/07/2024 16:52

I’d go and have a look round John Lewis kitchen section. Pro cook things are good as someone said above. Have a look round for ideas, get it in there if you like it, and once you have a better idea what you want, shop online.

Soontobe60 · 08/07/2024 16:53

I bought everything from Sainsburys when I did my kitchen. They have some lovely crockery and lots of nice table linen etc

Icantfindanewname · 08/07/2024 17:16

Procook did a lovely canteen of cutlery, or whatever they are called these days. The outlet near us also did NHS discount.

I bought a scoville non stick pan from Dunelm (but they are available everywhere) and it's been so much better than some branded (Tefal, I'm looking at you) pans I've had.

LondonGrimmer · 08/07/2024 21:24

Thanks everyone. Shattered tonight but will do some online research tomorrow.

I find Denby too heavy and cumbersome for every day use?

Ah yes, we have some Scoville baking trays and they're brilliant! Will look into their roasters.

Ooh, love Sainsbury's! And will be budget friendly, too. Fingers crossed we find some nice crockery there (we have some odd side plates from there and they lasted well actually - unless you drop them on the floor like I did! 😂).

Pretty sure we have ProCook saucepans. They still look brand new after a decade. Hoping they'll work on our new induction hob (used to have gas). We have an Outlet nearby so can browse there for cutlery too.

Nearest John Lewis is 45 mins drive away (sob) but will try and get there soon.

John Lewis is great for this sort of stuff

RomainingToBeSeen · 08/07/2024 21:37

Prestige baking trays and roasting tins are excellent and seem to last for ages without warping.

Global knives are amazing. Expensive but amazing.

M&S white Maxim crockery is good. Also tends to stay in stock so you can replace easily if it gets broken/cracked.

Sod's law says that whatever plates/bowls/mugs you choose, if you buy extras and stash away as replacements you will never need them as the current set will be virtually indestructible. If however you only just buy enough they will be discontinued as soon as you break one.

AnnaMagnani · 08/07/2024 21:42

Anything Oxo Goodgrips will be worth the money.

If you really love baking then Delia has a collection with Silverwood Bakeware. It's great but DH will never forgive me as it needs hand washing.

I have other roasting tins but it's my Falconware enamel that gets used over and over again.

LondonGrimmer · 08/07/2024 22:05

@RomainingToBeSeen I've had that thought already re crockery! Whether to go IKEA so I know I'll be able to pick up odd replacements, or go with a lovely limited edition set and cry when we break a plate that can't be replaced 😆

I've just remembered that I'm quite particular with the weighting on cutlery - can't stand heavy handles that are awkward to hold and use. Ergo, will need to be able to go to a shop where I can pick up the knife and fork to test them (not weird at all, right?).

Ditto cereal bowls...ideally they would easily fit 2 x Weetabix side-by-side in them.

I think I'll be off to the Outlet, Sainsbury's and John Lewis then...

Harts of Stur are great for discounted kitchenware.

@LondonGrimmer

Nope, not weird At All. The feel is the most important part of it! I can't stand cutlery that looks more like gardening equipment - far too big!

I hope you love your new kitchen!!

I just bought some le cruiset mugs and I love them!!! Pretty colours

RandomMess · 10/07/2024 21:32

We got Denby for our wedding. Disaster.

Have cheapo IKEA white "glass" crockery, absolutely love it. Fits in the dishwasher, thin so food stays piping hot, goes with everything and bomb proof.

RandomMess · 10/07/2024 21:34

These are the dinner plates, do side plates, 2 x different bowls Etc
