Do cleaners like to clean?

If you are a cleaner, domestic or otherwise, do you enjoy cleaning?

I have never had a cleaner for various reasons, one reason is I feel bad expecting someone to clean up after me and my family.
To me cleaning my own home is bad enough, I can’t imagine being happy to clean elsewhere.

However, if I thought that the person was happy in their work I might consider it in the future as I age.

I hate cleaning but was a cleaner for 5 years. I was very grateful for the work and did a good job you don't do it for the love of the job you do it because you need cash.

Tarantella6 · 29/06/2024 09:46

My previous cleaner said she liked coming to our house because she really felt like she was making a difference 🫣 which she absolutely was and I miss her very much! So yes if your house is a mess then someone might get some satisfaction from restoring order!

Backtothedungeon · 29/06/2024 09:47

Ours says she does. She is always willing to fit us in around other commitments as she says she enjoys doing it.

NoraLuka · 29/06/2024 09:47

I was a cleaner for about 6 months when the DC were little, because it was part time and could fit it in around exH’s shifts. I didn’t enjoy it as such, but it was convenient and I needed the money. I definitely didn’t hate it or anything, and it had some good points as it wasn’t stressful, no annoying colleagues and the clients were mostly nice.

I imagine that if you wanted to work for yourself, being a self employed cleaner could be a good way of doing that.

Movinghouseatlast · 29/06/2024 09:49

Cleaners near me charge £20- ,£30 an hour which isn't bad for an unskilled job ( though cleaning is definitely a skill)

I clean my own holiday cottages. I hate cleaning but needs must. I actually have a cleaner for my own house because I can't face it after cleaning all day- she says she loves cleaning!

Tlolljs · 29/06/2024 09:49

Perhaps cleaners enjoy their jobs as much as anyone else? Some do some don’t. I would imagine it depends hugely on what they’re cleaning too.

Beautifulbythebay · 29/06/2024 09:50

Been cleaning self employed for 11 years. Absolutely love it.

Silviasilvertoes · 29/06/2024 09:59

I cleaned to fund my way through university. The work was useful and flexible. I preferred it to working in a shop. A well paid cleaning job with a good employer can be just fine and I’d encourage you to have a cleaner because it provides work. You can feel good about someone doing it as long as you treat them well.

MovingSwiftlyOn · 29/06/2024 10:20

I've been a cleaner and yes I did get a lot of satisfaction from it, provided the person I was working for was ok and didn't look down on me at all, in which case I was off like a shot!
I really enjoyed the few hours a week stress free, carrying out simple manual tasks while thinking my thoughts or listening to an audible book yet still feeling it was a good use of my time.
If you do decide to employ someone don't feel awkward about it, it could come over as you being snobby. Just treat them like you would any one else.

RaininSummer · 29/06/2024 10:33

Surely it's just a job. You don't have to enjoy it do you. Most people only work because they need to be paid to live. I guess you wouldn't be a cleaner if you actively hated it.

Hoppinggreen · 29/06/2024 10:35

Mine says she hates cleaning as such but likes the flexibility and how easy it is.
She is very good though and does't complain about it at all.

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 29/06/2024 10:46

Lots of useful info to ponder. Thank you all.

I’m a right softy and would be a good employer. How to find someone who enjoys it might be a bit tricky. I’ll cross that bridge if I ever come to it.

One more thing- do most clients go out and leave the cleaner(s) to it?
I would feel terrible being around, unless I was WFH too.

I have a cleaner. She likes walking between jobs, catching up with clients for a chinwag, seeing different houses and the fact that she's her own boss. I don't think she positively loves cleaning but she does it at lightning speed and feels pleased at a job well done.

I wouldn't feel bad about hiring someone to do a job they've chosen to do. If you're paying the going rate and they're not trafficked immigrants or anything, I don't see how it's different to any other job.

haveatye · 29/06/2024 10:53

I try not to get in her way but can be in when she comes round.

It was a bit awkward at first but not now. You get people to make and serve you food even though you can cook yourself, how is it different to have someone help with the house?

MargotEmin · 29/06/2024 10:54

It's funny how cleaning brings out this sensitivity in many of us (me included) when paying for typically male semi-skilled labour (window cleaning, gardening etc) doesn't. It's almost as if women are conditioned to give their labour for free.. oh wait!

haveatye · 29/06/2024 10:54

My cleaner is also ludicrously healthy. She's active all day. She really enjoys the fitness.

ilovesooty · 29/06/2024 10:54

Mine says she loves it. She's very good at it too.

ByCupidStunt · 29/06/2024 10:54

According to mumsnetters they all know loads of millionairesses who set themselves up as cleaning ladies so on that basis I'd say yes, they do.

Gosh where do you live?! Then people turn their noses up as junior doctors who have worked for 8 years post 4 years of medical school for wanting more..!

woolymamouthh · 29/06/2024 11:09

Not many people enjoy work but we are forced to work so we do it.
You don't not order food in a restaurant in case the doesn't like cooking.
If you don't hire her to clean your house then someone else will.

Youdontevengohere · 29/06/2024 11:14

It’s a job. Some people enjoy their jobs, some don’t. Most people mainly work because they get paid for it. Hiring a cleaner is giving someone work that they wouldn’t be getting if you didn’t hire them.
Do you think all waiters enjoy serving your food? All bin men like taking your rubbish? In fact we read on here every single day that most teachers hate their jobs but we still send our kids to school. I’m not sure what enjoyment of the role really has to do with it do be honest.

Cornwall. Cleaners are like gold dust here!

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 29/06/2024 16:01

@ladykale medical school in uk is minimum 5 years, not 4, plus 2 years of foundation programme. Plus another 8 years minimum (longer for the majority) in self funded exam based training in a specialty or work area.
