I have a collection of Souper cube moulds and I really love them. I have various health issues which means I often have to eat Different foods to my family, plus fatigue, so meal prep is win-win for me.
My issue is after the cubes of frozen food are popped out what to do with them.
I mostly use the 1 cup size for single portion of stews, soups, pilaf, curry etc
I have a large upright freezer and The cubes fill the top two shelves so I have quite a large rotation of different things , although not always, sometimes stocks are much lower! I do bulk cooking for the kids as well with all the standard bolognese etc.
Atm the cubes go into large cornstarch zip bags and then into a plastic bin that I side out. But they don't fit very well, and I can't see through the bags. I do reuse the bags but They don't last for many uses and they do rip sometimes as well .It's generally messy and awkward to get them out.
On their website they recommend either vacuum packing which would make them fit in better but I don't want to do that as it because of the plastic and also because then when you take out one cube they're no longer vacuum packed . Their other recommendation is Stasher stand up silicone bags but these are really expensive. I do have some reusable silicone bags which are great for the smaller cubes of things, but not so great for these bigger ones. Probably because mine are the flat type not the stand-up type.
I've seen on social media a company called Stockd selling cubes of frozen food and they come in cardboard boxes. I kind of think those cardboard boxes would be ideal to stash my cubes in, but I wonder does that mean the food will get freezer burned and where would I buy those from?
Would it be possible to have the cubes in a bin loose? Do away with the bags completely. And Maybe With labels at the front of the bin - But will the food get freezer burned?
Has anybody found a really great solution? Ideally not too expensive.
