Keeping wooden worktop dry around sink

We’ve just had a new kitchen fitted. We decided to cut cost on the worktop and get wood and, a week in, I have the horrible feeling that I’m going to regret that decision.

We have a butler sink with a curved spout tap fixed to the worktop, so every time you reach to turn the tap off, there’s a line of water from the edge of the sink to the tap. I also got a ceramic tray to hold the soap and washing up liquid next to the sink but it suffers the same fate and the water is getting trapped underneath, which I know is going to be a death sentence for the worktop!

I have been duly wiping this every time with a cloth and generally every time I go in the kitchen and see someone else has got it wet, but after a couple of busy days for me meaning no wiping, that area has got saturated and darkened. I dried it off and left a dry tea towel pressed to it for a few hours and it’s back to normal but I just know it’s going to get bad very quickly.

I’m resigned to wire wooling and re-oiling the whole thing regularly but this particular area is going to need daily preventative action.

Any tips, tricks or product recommendations to deal with this? Or is it literally all about hovering and wiping like a woman possessed?!

What wood is the work top and what was it treated with.
it needs to be sealed. A good treatment is Osmo Cold Wax Oil. It’s expensive but excellent. The worktop will need 3 coats. The wood must be completely dry before applying it. So won’t be able to use the sink to allow it to dry out. And will need time for the treatment to dry.
