Can I get the smell of cigarette smoke out of a Bumbo?

I just bought a Bumbo second hand on ebay but as I excitedly unwrapped it this morning, I realised that the ad had not specified that it was from a smoke free home . It's already stinking the house out and I really don't want to put dd into it until it's slightly less stinky. Has anyone got any solutions other than leaving it to fumigate naturally? I don't know whether it's safe to spray it with Febreze or Neutrodol, or whether they would work anyway....

can you leave it outside for a few days? ( but take it in during the pm)

Can you try a teeny tiny patch test with Milton ?

mrsbigpants · 08/04/2008 14:16

Thanks Boys, I like the idea of trying a test patch with Miltons - it's not as agressive as things like bleach. Will give that a go and let you know how it went. My back stop was leaving it outside so I may try that too, thanks hana.

mothercare have brand new ones on sale atm

don't smell at all

Milton has bleached many of my clothes, so be very careful. I'd leave it in the garden for a few days, esp. in a high wind.

Just as a by-the-way, have you get set, bumbo!

mrsbigpants · 08/04/2008 17:21

LOL at the ready-set-bumbo clip! Just hope ours doesn't come with the same functionality!

Just saw that Mothercare had them on sale (boo) but they didn't have the colour I wanted (lime green) and I haven't found it on line either so will put up with having to get rid of the smell. It's outside right now getting an airing and I've done test patches of Miltons (neat and diluted) on the base... no sign of any harm yet

it's been outside for 2 days solid, and I've cleaned it with both washing up liquid and miltons but it still smells (although possibly a bit better now ). Anyway, tried dd in it today, and all she wanted to do was escape! typical.

Make a paste with bicarb of soda and spread it all over (after patch test) - bicarb is great for getting rid of smells.

mrsbigpants · 17/04/2008 22:10

thanks brrrrmmmmm. Have covered it in bicarb paste. Will leave it over night and let you know how I got on. Not hopeful though - test patch doesn't seem to smell any sweeter . I don't think anything will get the smell out at this rate.

what is a bumbo and can you not just wash it in the machine?

mrsbigpants · 22/04/2008 22:13

Sorry - been away from my PC for a while. It's one of those seats that looks like an oversized potty that supports dd/ds before they can sit up properly themselves. It's about 30 cm diameter and made of polyurethane foam... machine washing not advisable!

Tried the all-over bicarb pasting... certainly helped. Thanks brrrmmm. Still smells though .. I think it's beyond saving. Probably no bad thing though as dd seems distinctly underwhelmed by it!
