Do you rent out a house or flat by the week to holiday-makers? - what do people expect to have provided?

Bedding
Towels
soap
loo roll
washing up liquid
internet connection
etc.....

???

We may be returning to the UK from Spain next year and would try to rent our recently renovated house out by the week/weekend through an agency.

What should be provided and what not?

What other supplies, equipment or amenities do people expect?

in the UK we usually rent a cottage every year and the things we most like having are bed linen and towels and all the basic cleaning stuffs there - loo cleaner/cloths etc...am happy to provide my own loo rolls/soap/w up liquid, though if there's a dishwasher it's nice to have dishwasher tabs 9 as we don't have one at home, so is alien)...am not bothered by internet access on holiday ! Definitely should have washing machine and dryer and decent knives

Notquitegrownup · 06/04/2008 17:18

We are doing up a little flat in the UK and looked at letting through an agent. They have very specific requirements about what you have to provide, including the age of the curtains and carpets. It would be sensible to check with an agent for details.

Not bothered by internet connection.

Do like bedding and towels provided.

Agree on decent knives.
Corkscrew/bottle opener
A casserole dish
A box of stuff for kids - pens/paper/puzzles/books

Um, will think more. Have just come back from week away and that's what sticks out atm

ruksak · 06/04/2008 17:20

i think if you go onto the uk tourist board it will lisdt everything that should be inside each grade of house

If you want to be graded by the English Tourist Board then they give you a very specific list of what needs to be in there. It's a really random list.

ruksak · 06/04/2008 17:21

but what it is called

not glossary
not agenda
not itinary
ooo bugger --it is on the tip of my tongue

Shitemum · 06/04/2008 17:22

Thanks!
As we will be living in the house for about a year first (I lied about it being recently done up, it's not finished yet!) it will have washing machine etc and decent knives.
Dryer won't be neccesary as it's warm most of the year, tho' was thinking of putting pulley in larder for the winter, or there's a sort of roofed bit on the terrace where a drying frame could go...

I suppose previous tenents will leave washing up liquid and if not people will do a big shop when they arrive and get stuff like that.

X post sorry.

And I didn't read the OP properly - why would you want ETB rating in Spain??

Shitemum · 06/04/2008 17:25

Wow! where did all those replies come from?
There was only one when i typed the above one the MaryAS. Thanks.

To clarify - the house is in Spain not UK but the requirements for Uk could give me some clues i suppose.

Inventory ruksak. Had to struggle for taht myslef then.

Tinker · 06/04/2008 17:27

Salt and pepper. ALways really annoying to have to buy a huge tub on arrival at overpriced local shop. (I take my own now, am a hardened holday cottage renter now)

Shitemum · 06/04/2008 17:28

Also, do you think it would be a very bad idea to leave some of our personal stuff (books, toys, pictures) locked in cupboards around the house - would it be better to store elsewhere? Am hoping people will be respectful and not steal my breadboard etc or am i naive?

What about hi-fi, DVD player etc?

OP posts:
MaryAnnSingleton · 06/04/2008 18:00

is nice to have those - dvd,cd player etc, but can live without !

Shitemum · 06/04/2008 18:04

Also, if you are looking for a holiday flat or house and there are several possibilities in the same area what makes you chose one over the others and has it a lot to do with the photos?

Would you be put off by a house that slept 6 and had a sofa bed in the living room as the bed for 5th and 6th person?

OP posts:
MaryAnnSingleton · 06/04/2008 18:06

I think photos do play in important part - I love it if the cottage/house looks like somewhere I'd live - ie. the kind of furnishings etc I'd choose ! And no, don't think I'd mind the sofa bed thing, but would depend who I was holidaying with -

Shitemum · 06/04/2008 18:19

It's still far off but I was thinking of doing photos that are more suggestive than the usual ones - like one of the balcony doors open with the lovely view and a cushion and a book and a glass of wine on the floor to make people imagine themselves sitting there.

OP posts:
MaryAnnSingleton · 06/04/2008 18:22

sounds good...some places do 360 degree views all round rooms, which is quite good...but I like the idea of a glass of wine, open book, half eaten melon...

Shitemum · 06/04/2008 18:34

Thanks!
I just hate it when the photos are of the beds in a corner of the room or the shower cubicle, which doesnt give the atmosphere of a house at all!

A sofa-bed in teh living room would put me off but I don't think it would for others. I look for an enclosed garden (have a 2 year old who I like to let play out safely)

Old-fashioned furnishings put me off. Swirly carpets, fussy nylon bedspreads etc. I am surprised at what some people think they can charge for these things ie teh same as a house where someone has made an effort.

Shitemum · 06/04/2008 22:09

thanks tinker
It doesn't have a garden just a roof terrace. No carpets either, it's the South of Spain (inland)
I like things to be plain so nothing swirly either! Floors are all terracotta, walls are white.

Tinker · 06/04/2008 22:10

Oh, it sounds very, very nice.

MaryAnnSingleton · 07/04/2008 08:37

yes, does sound lovely !
