Generally speaking the mattress wears out before the bed does. Our current bed is 17yo and we replaced the mattress 2y ago. Should have replaced the mattress a year or two earlier, but Covid got in the way.

Our bed is a wooden frame, and the bolts need tightening every few years. Otherwise it's still perfect.

If your divan is still solid, and you don't actually want to replace it, why not just clean it? I imagine carpet cleaner should do the job.

NuffSaidSam · 27/05/2024 10:10

You should change your mattress every 10 years (give or take).

The actual bed doesn't need to be replaced unless it's broken.

Bed companies reckon you should replace the mattress after eight years but it’s in their interest to say that. Personally I think you get about 10-12 years from a mattress, maybe more if it isn’t heavily used.

My bed frame was my grandmother's so goodness knows how old it is, my mattress gets changed every 8-10 years

If yours is fabric though can you try cleaning it, as someone suggested with a carpet cleaner?

wogjalr · 27/05/2024 10:14

I was told 8 years mattress (but that was directly from a mattress seller Wink) I doubt there would be any need to change a divan if it's otherwise sturdy. Invest in the mattress.

Our bed is 14yo, on its third mattress. First mattress... wasn't worth shipping home on an international move (was 7yo then.) 2nd mattress.. . It was fine, but we treated ourselves to a full size one rather than 2 connected together when we stopped moving around every couple of years (super king size bed)

Yes I was thinking of just changing the mattress and keeping the base

All depends on the quality. My bed frame is at least 26 years old, rock solid pine from Argos. Best £200 I ever spent 😂
It could do with sanding and repainting as it's gone a bit orange but apart from that it's fine.
I've had other bed bases in recent years where the slats are so thin they break after 6 months.

A good sprung mattress should last about 12 years unless it's roughly used / gets stained.
(Obviously the sellers will say differently)
Latex foam mattresses maybe 5 years
