Ecover Fabric Softener

I've been using Ecover Fabric Softener. Even at two capfuls it just doesn't seem to soften towels much. How do others find it? Can anyone recommend a better non-toxic alternative please?

Vinegar

You shouldn't use softener on towels! It makes them less absorbent.

towels will not get soft from using softener.
drying on the line flapping in the wind or tumble drying gets them soft.
imo softener is for the scent.

What is softener for then? As for scent, a few drops of essential oil in white vinegar in the last rinse is better value! That doesn't seem to soften either. How much is needed?

Have tried vinegar, doesn't seem to work.

For towels, dry them on the line then whack them in the tumble dryer for ten mins to soften.

For fabric softener for other clothes; just add a glug of white distilled vinegar which you can buy cheaply in 5l bottles

Your towels have a build up of fabric conditioner which makes them stiff, hard and less absorbent.

Wash them with a minimum amount of detergent, use vinegar instead of fabric conditioner, either tumble dry from wet or finish in the dryer with the tumble dryer balls.

Rewash all your current towel as above, there's also an alternative with method of using baking soda instead of vinegar too. It might take a few washes to remove the residue.

I stopped using fabric softener altogether a few years ago and once I used to not smelling it off laundry I found the results better. Better for the environment too.

Thank you Sparrowball, and others. I'm learning! Perhaps my main problem here is not having a tumble dryer!
