Deep frying for dummies

I've never deep fried before! But we have all been inspired by an episode of a cooking show and dd wants us to make a certain thing.

Can you reuse the oil after cooking something in it? For example we might make churros

If yes, how many times? And what container do you recommend to pour the hot used oil into, so you can reuse it?

I know not to put any used oil down the sink. We have a food waste bin so I can put cold used oil in that.

Thank you in advance for your tips

Yes you can reuse it. We wait for the oil to cool down (using the fryers thermometer) completely and then sieve it into an empty bottle. We then use that oil for any general frying we do but not again for deep frying.

Thank you! We are just going to deep fry in a pan/wok but we have a probe type thermometer we can use!

Is the bottle you use just a standard plastic one? I'm wondering if I have to buy a Pyrex one but I guess I don't if I let it cool first!

It's one of these oil dispenser type bottles that we use:

But we've use an empty plastic oil bottle before as well.

Enjoy your frying! We love making tonkatsu in ours 😍

The thing to remember is not to overfill the pan/wok as the volume of oil increases when you add cold things and they are a huge cause of kitchen fires.

In terms of oil, I used to wait for it to cool, and then using a funnel, put a piece of kitchen roll in as a filter, and then filter the oil back into the bottle it came in.

Nobody should be throwing oil out at all. Reuse it.

Even the oil I use to make and store sundried tomatoes in, all gets used in cooking in some way. I never throw it out.

Thank you for the tip, yeah I'm very cautious of kitchen fires - that's why uve never deep fried before haha.

I'm also a fan of reusing everything! Even when the oil gets quite skanky after several uses we can use it soaked in paper towel as firelighters for the bbq
