Please advise how you would tackle the following:

  1. shower curtains still stained with mould, after pre-soaking in bleachy cold water and hot washing with bio powder and line drying.
  2. a wicker picnic basket that has been stored on the top of kitchen units and has a nice coating of slightly greasy dust that has got between the weave of the basket.

Thanks if you have any ideas! I might consider throwing out the shower curtain, although I really hate to put things in landfill so would rather rescue it.

Definitely can't throw out the picnic basket - it's a lovely traditional one and was a wedding present.

Astonish mould and mildew remover maybe. Spray it on and leave it overnight. It cleaned the mould on my silicone. Had to cover it with toilet roll drenched in the stuff and let it sit overnight, I was amazed when it came off.

Elbow grease cleaner is amazing on grease. Maybe a spray on a cloth will enable you to wipe it off, & a toothbrush. It will take ages though. It got car oil off my white wall.

Throw the shower curtain!
Basket is tricky - I’d probably try my hand held steamer to melt the grease

I initially though tissue & blast it with hairdryer, but then thought it might absorb the grease.

Hg oven cleaner for the basket. The shower curtain is probably beyond salvage.

Foggymcfogson · 10/05/2024 18:37

Hot wash the shower curtain..
Warm Fairy water and a cloth on the basket and dry outside..

Have a look at Nancy Birtwhistle - she has loads of really good cleaning tips. This one might work for the shower curtain https://x.com/nancybbakes/status/1577184285487931392?s=46

Chuck the shower curtain and buy a new one. I’d get baby wet wipes and rub the basket, then I’d get a scrubbing brush and give it a go with that, then wipe it again with mild wipes.

Throw the shower curtain out and get a new one. They aren't expensive.

I'd take a toothbrush to the wicker basket with some fairly liquid.

WonderingWanda · 10/05/2024 18:48

For the basket I would give it a clean with fairy liquid and a washing up brush to get into the gaps then rinse and dry in the lovely hot sun tomorrow. I reckon it'll be ok if you dry it as quickly as possible.

Basket- white spirit and a microfibre cloth
Shower curtain- probably beyond saving. I have two and I wash mine in with the towels on a 50° bio wash every week or so. It never gets mould or discolouration.

TTPD · 10/05/2024 18:53

Scrub the shower curtain with white vinegar, then rinse and leave out in the sun. If that doesn't work, chuck it.

mathanxiety · 10/05/2024 20:03

Oven cleaner on the basket. Leave to cut through the greasy grime and then rinse in hot water.

White vinegar on the shower curtain if woven, bleach if plastic, and leave out in the sun. Or cut off the mouldy area and use the rest for a drop cloth or other dirty job in the future.

Therageisreal · 10/05/2024 20:07
  1. Buy a new one
  2. Warm water with washing up liquid in the bath, swosh it around and then put in the sun to dry. If it’s super greasy you may need to rub washing up liquid directly onto it first and then rinse.
BatshitCrazyWoman · 10/05/2024 20:08

You need to wash the shower curtain with towels or something, as they have an abrasive action. It should work now, unless it's really bad.

Thepartnersdesk · 10/05/2024 21:14

Spray the shower curtain with mold and mildew remover and leave it overnight. It works best just left.

Then chuck it through washing machine.
