My two children and i are moving to a Britsh Columbia and we are going to live with my new partner and hs three children in their really nice new house.
My new partners family, his parents and what seems to be all his friends all have a shoes off at the door rule.
We have never done this but Josh says that its always been a way of life and part of the local culture to take your shoes off at the door.
His family is so nice and his mother has already bought my children and me new slippers to put straight on.And they look really comfy and i know that theywere very expensive
Its a cold climate so obviously if you arent gong to wear shoes then slipper essental. I suppose that its really a question of etiquette.
We want to fit in and dont want to offend.I know that when Josh goes to his parents his has a pair of his own slippers there to put on and whe everyone goes to visit friends
they take ther slippers.Should i ask his mother to the children and me slippers of our for keeping at his parents and friends.
I have been on a Vancouver website regarding shoe etiquette.Basically it says that shoes always come off at the door and that many homes expect visitors to bring slippers with them.It says that
its consdered extremely disrespectful to wear shoes in the house in BC.Like i said its new to us.We have got the children into a very good school. And once again on the website t says that for some parts of the program that students are expected to change into slippers to aid relaxtIon etc.MY two are going to find that very wierd. I have already started to practice the shoes off slppers thing
at home so that we can be ready, but our some people think that we have gone mad.But i have always tried to be tolerant of other cultures and lifestyles.
Have any of you had ths situation with shoe etiquette.I have friends in Sweden and they say that shoes off and slippers on at the door is the norm there/
Apparantly in Vancouver some restaurants etc expect shoes to come off.And they are not Chinese.I think i am going to get on some online sites and get us a few
pairs of slippers before we go.Its so cold there im gong to get us really furry ones.

Surely everyone takes their shoes off when they are inside?

I always wear slippers in the house as does DD, we get it from my mum. I love my slippers.

I have to say Laura that I have not been to anyones house where they wear shoes. Most people either go barefoot or with slippers.

Always take shoes off in the house as soon as I go in, usually have bare feet though even in Jan as can't stand slippers - do have extra think slipper socks for when it is really cold.

Would however find putting slippers on in public places quite stange. Must say I have never encoutered this in Canada (and have been to Vancouver) - maybe I just missed it and everyone was whispering how rude I was behind my back .

I think slippers for your house and dp's mother's and just see what happens everywhere else (maybe some handbag sized Totes style slipper socks if you are worried going out).

Doesn't have to be slipper slippers either - just indoor shoes, so you don't drag dirt into the house. Birkenstock type, or ugg boots are luvverly

I always go barefoot in the house. Do they not have heating in Canada?

I love my Innuit slippers fromt he white company - I would love a culture like that, and so nice that DP's mum has been out and bought you all some slippers.

Good luck, hope it all goes well
