Airfryer plates have lost non stick coating

MissRabbit00 · 27/04/2024 11:53

We have had the Ninja Dual Zone airfryer for about 10 months and the plates that sit in the bottom of baskets seem to have already lost their non stick coating - literally everything now just sticks to the bottom.

Is it normal for this to happen? We've never put the plates through the dishwasher etc. We can buy replacements for £40 but that seems a lot if we're having to replace them every year.

Have you used metal utensils on the non stick?
I have had this air fryer for a few months so I am following with interest.
I have had it for about 4 months but I hardly use it as I am still wondering what to cook in it apart from toast. Chips, that are made from scratch, still taste better when made in the oven.

MissRabbit00 · 27/04/2024 16:51

No not used any metal utensils on it.

I dont want to spend money on the new plates either until we figure out where we've gone wrong.

We often cook a whole chicken in it and have wondered whether all the grease from that has just been too much for it.

My Ninja is two years old and plates are fine

I set it to soak the minute I finish using it. Pour any fat into a jar then a dollop of fairy and fill to the top with hot water. After eating its easy cleaned with one of those plastic covered, brightly coloured cheap sponge things - got to be plastic not the metal ones

suki1964 · 28/04/2024 09:14

Posted before I added, you can buy compatible plates from Amazon half the price

Soontobe60 · 28/04/2024 09:26

I use mine a lot and the plates are fine. My tip is to put a piece of kitchen roll in the bottom under the plate. This catches all the fats and can be thrown away easily rather than putting fat down the drains.
You could always put a piece of grease proof paper under the food to prevent sticking?

I would love to do this but hadn’t occurred to me as I would have thought the kitchen roll would burn?

FawnFrenchieMum · 28/04/2024 09:30

If it’s only 10 months old, call Ninja customer services they should send you some replacement plates.
Do you use any oil in it as certain ones are not recommended.

I wouldn’t do this, with the fans it could easily get blown up into the heating elements.

The bottom plate lifts out in a Ninja so kitchen roll wouldn't fly around ince its back in place. My Ninja has been in multiple daily use for about 9 months and the plates are perfect.

I do use something like this on really greasy stuff like chicken, it does help with the cleaning to a certain degree, but agree with PP, get the drawers and plates into hot soapy water as soon as you can. I'd definitely be complaining to Ninja if the coating hadn't lasted 12 months.

Only oils that come from things we've cooked in there (i.e carrots tossed in olive oil) we don't ever 'grease' the plates as such. We started to in the last week after food sticking to it so badly we were having to scrape it off!

Defo going to contact ninja though!

I use a silicon liner/tray to collect grease etc.

goingdownfighting · 30/04/2024 11:21

Do you put them in the dishwasher?

Ihateslugs · 30/04/2024 12:09

Apparently some spray oils contain an ingredient which affects the non stick surface - in the US, Pan is one make which causes problems but I’m not sure of which brands are an issue in the UK.

The solution is to put any oil ( bare minimum) onto the food directly with a pastry brush.

I’ve had my Ninja max for over two years, use it a couple of times a week and the surface of the crisper tray is still perfect.

I used mine this week to cook some sausages and to crisp up a jacket potato which I mainly cooked in the microwave. Another night I cooked some chicken tenders in it then shredded them and added to a wrap with cheese, onion and chilli sauce before putting the wraps back in the fryer to crisp up. Lots of ways to use an air fryer!

Stoufer · 30/04/2024 12:13

I agree with pp - low-fat spray oil is vicious stuff on non-stick surfaces… it has ruined so many frying pans and the inner basket of my air fryer (twice)…

peachescariad · 30/04/2024 12:15

I've had my Ninja dual for over a year and the bottom plates always go through the dishwasher and are absolutely fine - we use a silicon basket or a disposable liner about 8 out of 10 times but roast potatoes , chips etc go straight on the plates.

goingdownfighting · 30/04/2024 14:17

You can buy an oil spray bottle- just put normal oil in it and spray. I got mine from Amazon.

lovemycbf · 30/04/2024 14:37

Mine has done this too in the plates ,I got some non stick liners that are just greaseproof paper with holes in and nothing sticks now

I got a sprayer from Lakeland with a pump action gadget on the top which stops the nozzle getting blocked with old oil. I tend to brush large pieces of food such a steak or pork chops before I season it.

suki1964 · 30/04/2024 19:37

in the UK its the one calorie sprays that are a problem. Just buy a spray bottle and decant your oil of choice

Dont however do as I did, mix the Khol spray with the oil :)

MissRabbit00 · 01/05/2024 09:07

It only ever been olive oil we've used, and only on the actual food (as in none poured into the air fryer), defo no low cal sprays.

Also not put the plates through the dishwasher or used any metal utensils on them.

We'll see what Ninja come back and say!
