Anyone have any good ideas?

Open your windows and air rooms regularly.

Seagrassbasket · 22/04/2024 16:10

Some ground coffee simmered away for a couple of hours on the stove

BIWI · 22/04/2024 16:11

What's making it smell unpleasant?

Imatorturedpoet · 22/04/2024 16:12

I buy these essential oil room sprays on etsy, they do a small bottle for £2.99 so you can try and see if you like the scent.

I wouldn't say it's unpleasant, just not fresh. Maybe the two cats who hardly ever go out. I'm not sure.

Dh doesn't like artificial smells so I was hoping for some natural ones. Coffee is good. Is there anything you can just put out and leave it? Lemons or something?!

I also have one of these <<amzn.eu/d/j3GvOKh>> and these wax melts <<piecesforplaces.co.uk/freckleface-10-mixed-soya-wax-melts>>

Do the cats have litter trays?

Springtimewingtime · 22/04/2024 16:17

Opening windows every day for as long as possible and giving the place a good blow through. Clean. Wash any throws/cushion covers. Maybe simmering sliced lemon or vanilla? I'm like your DH and don't like artifical scents so just go with clean and aired.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 22/04/2024 16:19

Wash or steam clean any textiles (curtains, carpets, sofas etc) and as others have said, air regularly.

Yes but they're outside and covered ones. Their food is left out all day though. I think the windows is probably the best idea!

I do think the sofa smells a bit of cats and the cushions

I'm not saying your house smells but neutradol air freshener is brilliant.

HesterPrincess · 22/04/2024 16:21

I can't bear artificial smells, and once found some lovely little wooden shapes (like acorns) that I soak with essential oils. Great for in drawers and out in bowls on display. I've got 2 dogs so have to avoid some oils but things like lemon and lavender oils work well together. I've also got an oil vaporiser that you fill with water and put oils into.

We had a room that smelled musty and steam cleaning the curtains made all the difference. It could well work on a sofa too as the steam penetrates and kills bacteria.

Peppermint essential oil in a water vapour diffuser. It smells really fresh and we always get comments

Dewdilly · 22/04/2024 16:25

Wash your cushions if possible. Do you have carpet? Clean it. You can sprinkle it with washing powder and then hoover it. I wouldn’t use wax melts or anything. Otherwise, open windows.

Millersmerkin · 22/04/2024 16:26

Be careful with some essential oils as they are toxic to cats.

No carpets

I don't know what one of those is! Sounds good I'll look it up

OK the smell isn't cat litter trays, good.

Definitely wash the throws/cushion covers regularly.

Think about changing the sofas to leather (not pretend leather, real leather) easy to wipe clean.

Opening windows daily is always a good idea anyway - the dratted prolonged wet weather hasn't been conducive, has it.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 22/04/2024 16:33

I like the cleaning sprays Method makes, they smell much more natural and fresher than some others.

A simmer pot is nice - a bit of rosemary, half a lemon and some vanilla essence/pod which you gently warm in water over a very low heat or a slow cooker. There are lots of ideas for mixes online but that's the one I like. Apparently it's the scent of Williams Sonoma (fancy homeware store in New York)

Ahhhhhbisto · 22/04/2024 18:36

I do the simmering trick but I use cinnamon. House smells lovely afterwards!

Will your cats leave plants alone OP? If so what about something fragrant in a pot or vase?

Sometimes satsumas smell amazing when you peel them and the smell lingers.

Do you have carpets or hard floors?
