Putting away the winter clothes

The vac bag solution has its limitations. They either don't stay airtight or they do and the items are so crushed the creases do not come out unless washed again.

I tend to also use suitcases for shoes.

I'm prepared to buy some better storage for clothing as the loft is being boarded (floor only)

Anything a bit cleverer?!

large clear storage bags from lakeland

I don't understand why ppl store winter clothes, it's cold most of the year here!

where are you?

i am kent and don’t touch my winter clothes from around Mid May to mid september

Caspianberg · 20/04/2024 16:09

I just use a nice looking cardboard box with lid. Like a large sturdy gift box. Lives ontop of wardrobe. loads in tkmax

I don’t pack away everything, but thermal tops, thicker wool socks, winter hats and gloves, thicker woolen skirts and similar. Same box holds my summer lightweight dresses, extra trainer socks and beach stuff in the reverse season. My wardrobe isn’t big enough to hold it all otherwise ( we only have one standard wardrobe that dh and I share, and two drawers each)

Nannyfannybanny · 20/04/2024 16:14

I'm not joan.collins, I don't have wardrobe space for thick jumpers, cardigans, plus DH,once lighter clothing is out. We have a big box in the loft, lined with sheet polystyrene, layer of thick polystyrene on the top, close up the box,no damp,no problems. I do wash the clothes when they come down, probably may.

sleepyscientist · 20/04/2024 16:28

We use the vacuum bags but I find I want to wash it all when it comes down anyway.

elQuintoConyo · 20/04/2024 16:35

Vacuum bags. As pp, everything is washed beofre it`s worn again.

Shoes are stored in plastic boxes that slide under the bed.

Things are also culled, stuff I realise I haven`t worn all season, or are too small.

WTF? I think my keyboard is tripping balls 😆

TheYearOfSmallThings · 20/04/2024 16:38

Look, don't put them away yet. One year we had a blast of good weather and I put my winter stuff away at the beginning of April, and I swear there was three more months of winter. I don't think we need that this year!

Yes, still wearing thermals here and it’s so depressing.

Jeannie88 · 20/04/2024 16:42

I use large laundry bags, you can get 5 for £12 on ebay. Xx

I use the big Really Useful Storage boxes with the clip lids.

The only stuff that really goes in them over winter though are heavy winter jumpers and winter pjs. Everything else gets used most of the year.

Lelivre · 20/04/2024 16:48

I'm in the southwest and definitely don't need winter coats, jumper dresses, boots and the like.

Are the Really Useful Boxes going to be fine for jumpers and mustiness in a dry loft?

I don't mind re washing certain things but when they come down again at the start of the winter it's obviously harder to get things dry so I would prefer to do that now and pack away soon, I have started with down jackets scarfs etc.

Do you put moth balls in with things?

I use these under the bed. So things aren’t too squashed and don’t smell of loft.

I appreciate not everyone has loads of room under their bed though. I try and only put away a few things, woollen jumpers in winter and linen trousers in summer really.

They will be fine in really useful boxes. We put 90% of our clothes in them for a year in loft when we had major building works (and lived out of a suitcase), they were all fine after including cashmere stuff
