How do you store your house cleaning appliances out of sight and accessible?

When we first moved into our now 70+ year old house, it was apparent that the kitchen was really not suitable for storage of cleaning appliances, especially not tall-ish ones, as there was not enough space… 25+ years later and we now have:
Upright Hoover
Vax pull-along steam cleaner (heavy duty) and accessories
Shark compact steam cleaner + accessories
Vax hard floor roller mop
Vax compact carpet cleaner
Swiffer brush
Long-handled dustpan and brush
Rubber broom
All used regularly for various jobs around the house…

We keep the heavy-duty steam cleaner upstairs since it was used to successfully rid us of a bed bug infestation some years ago, and we regularly steam clean our headboard and the carpet behind it every 3 months (yea, paranoid, I know, but the little buggers haven’t come back yet!), but the others are dotted around in the shed, under the stairs, the garage Etc. and I would love to know if anyone has created a dedicated space to allow such a plethora of tools to be stored, rather than just shoving them into random spaces?

There are loads of ideas for how to store food appliances, but so far I’m drawing a blank for storage of large cleaning appliances - so, MNetters - what wonderful solutions do you have to inspire me?

In the cupboard under the stairs.
My carpet cleaner is in the loft as it isn't used as regularly as the vacuum cleaner.

@RampantIvy the problem with the cupboard under the stairs is that it’s too small at 4 feet tall at the highest point - it only resides under the 1st 11 stairs, and incorporates the bulky gas and electric meters, as well as the RCD board (kitchen pantry is under the landing with last 3 stairs forming a sloping ceiling in kitchen)
The loft isn’t practical as we aren’t getting any younger and it would be awkward to try to store a heavy appliance up there…
Really looking for nifty ideas for a cupboard storage system similar in size to a 600mm wide floor-to ceiling washer/dryer stacking one…

My sister keeps all hers in a fancy wardrobe 🤣

What space do you have? Kitchen? Utility room? Garage? All open plan?

DeedlessIndeed · 07/04/2024 08:47

We are re-doing our utility to have a row of full height kitchen cabinets that can store hoover, carpet cleaners, broom, steam mop etc.

Brooms, mops and long handled brush/pan (folds flat) hang on the wall of my utility. Hoover has its own little nook. Second upright hoover lives upstairs in the airing cupboard.

Do you have a suitable space anywhere? Airing cupboard? Or a kitchen cupboard being used for other things? Or a corner you could turn into a cupboard?

I know this is stating the irritatingly obvious, (yet something I need constant reminding of) but you nearly always have to sacrifice some of your other stuff to create storage. (And very worthwhile)

Don’t feel you have to store it all in one spot though just because they’re a category. It sounds very sensible to store the steamers upstairs if you use them there.

Can you buy a broom with a telescopic handle?
My mop has a telescopic handle with a hole at the top where I have put a bit of string on to hang it up on a hook in the cupboard under the stairs.

You have a lot of cleaning appliances. Do you really need all of them?

I have:
One vacuum cleaner (upright)
One Bissell carpet cleaner
One broom (plus dustpan and brush)
One floor mop (with telescopic handle)

@DeedlessIndeed that sounds exactly what I’m looking for! Are you planning to store all in one 600mm wide tall cupboard?
We are looking to refit our very small utility room with three tall 600mm cupboards, but need two of those for coat, airbed and sewing machine storage…
