To sell/donate my big box of cash?

I have alot of cds, some of which are years old, the cds visually have sentimental value and obviously i can subscribe to a spotify, Amazon, youtube or whatever to hear the music. I am also trying to live a less clutter free life but I'm scared I will regret it. To ditch or not?

It's so hard.

My husband and I have some amazing LPs from our youth..60s, 70s and 80s.

We were at the point of ditching our records but found a turntable that would digitalise our record collection and turn them into floppy discs or CDs.

We did a few but it was onerous.

We now find that our records are highly valued and there are turntables everywhere!
HMV is a revelation!

Oh lord just realised this thing autocorrected 'cds' into 'cash' in the title !! 🙄

I did wonder why you wanted rid of a big box of cash 😂

I have the same dilemma with CDs

😂If you're donating a big box of cash, I'm in!

I'm getting rid of my CDs, the cases are falling apart and despite the sentimental value (some bought when CDs WERE the technological revolution) tiem to move on.

VanillaImpulse · 03/04/2024 18:48

I would be careful getting rid of them as I find that the versions on Spotify can be different and then it's hard to go back and get the same version of the song again. With Spotify you never "own" the music but you do with your cds

OldTinHat · 03/04/2024 18:54

I sold all of my CDs to Music Magpie when I downsized a few years ago. Last year I sold my vinyls to a collector and did very well from it.

I only wish I had enough money to just donate a big box of cash !!🙏 But seeing as it is highly unlikely to ever happen I will continue with my poor woman pursuit of trying to declutter.

As for my cds I'm a procrastinator and a hoarder so it's a difficult one, going against my natural instincts !

😃....wouldn't it be great, my cd issue would be instantly forgotten if I won a few mill !

I get the sentimental value, but (unlike vinyl, as long as stored properly) CDs deteriorate with time, so it doesn't make sense to keep them.

Tisfortired · 03/04/2024 20:53

My DP recently got rid of hundreds of CDs when we needed the spare room clearing for DC2 about to be born. He was quite heartbroken I think, it was a great collection that he had accumulated over 20 years of his (quite particular!) favourite genre of music amongst others. He hadn’t played or looked at a single one in about a decade through and subscribes to Spotify for his music so they were really just taking so much space.

He had about 350 total, he sold them on music magpie and got about £220 I think. Some were worth nothing, some like 10p and some of the niche ones £7/£8/£9.

They do. They were sort of originally sold as pretty much indestructible, and compared to vinyl and tape they are tough, but don't last forever. They also don't have the mystique of vinyl (which I got rid of decades ago as it most certainly hadn't been stored properly, more played until almost smooth)

I'm going to go against the grain and say keep. You can get one of those big cd wallets, and transfer them into there, and get rid of the bulky plastic cases but sleep the discs and the cover booklets. You will end up weeding some out as part of that process - charity shop or use as bird deflectors on your garden. Streaming services are always removing content and it is nice to know that you still have your favourite's for when the wifi isn't working. Providing you still have a cd player...

SleepingStandingUp · 04/04/2024 09:23

I'd go through them on music magpie and see what you'd make. If there's a couple of CDs with major emotional appeal, are the covers cool enough to get as actual artwork to display?

If you have a big box of cash give it to me! I have several penny slot machines that need old pre-decimal pennies (a few 2/- bits wouldn't go amiss either for the pinballs).

I think I have a bag of old pennies here in a garage. Im pretty certain I spotted them the other day. Im pretty poorly today but if I do find them over the weekend , you are welcome to them

CastlesinSpain · 05/04/2024 17:41

@suki1964 Goodness, that's really kind of you. I'll happily pay you for them - but if any of them are Victorian it might be worth you selling them on Ebay.

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 05/04/2024 18:56

I find I get more pleasure from taking things like this to a charity shop than I do from buggering around trying to sell them for peanuts. I get a little bimble around the shop and the charity is welcome to 20p a piece or whatever they might fetch.

I'm not saying you should ditch all your beloved vinyl, but things like CDs don't earn their keep in most homes.

I believe in random acts of kindness so buy a stranger a coffee, keep it moving forwards

I'd keep physical media. You don't really own it on the streaming services.
