I know they say “if you haven’t worn it in a year” …

Context: I’m decluttering our entire house atm which has far too many clothes in it. For various reasons, like many people, we are having to make financial cuts. At the same time, I am undergoing a personal “body” declutter - have lost seven kilos - and am on track to lose ten to fifteen more.

The problem is, I really do have some really nice quality, hardly worn clothes in smaller sizes which I can’t afford to replace. Also, my age, body shape and style preferences pretty much dictate that my clothing choices remain the same, whatever size I am.

How do other people approach this problem?
Could do with some Mumsnet hive-mind wisdom please.

Do you think it would be reasonable to allow myself twelve core pieces in each descending size and store them in airtight vacuum bags in the attic?
I’d appreciate thoughts from people in a similar situation who have actually been there, done it!

Thank you!

Divide the clothes into size piles and then go through each pile, is it in good condition, the right colour, if it fitted and you saw it in a shop would you buy and wear it then keep it.

Whilst I think the mantra is good, it also depends on how much storage space you have. We have plenty of space in the loft & it is dry so I have bags of clothes up there. Some are too small; others are occasional wear so naturally worn infrequently. With the too small clothes, I am fairly ruthless about what I keep.

That sounds like a good strategy thank you Hoplittlebunnyhophophopandstop. Divide and conquer. I could do it for each category of clothes.

Those are good questions to ask too.

Thank you alphabettispagetti I do have lots of space it’s just getting to that point, where our overwhelming amount of clothes are all sorted in to categories, washed, ironed, packed away, that will be a task and a half. I am determined to do it though.
