Advice on utility room storage planning

I'm setting up a new utility room and could use some advice on optimizing our storage space. Here's what we're working with:

  • Left Side: A tall unit for the stacked washer/dryer.
  • Sink Unit: An 800mm unit for a 1.5 bowl sink, considering a 0.5 bowl for soaking clothes.
  • Storage Units: Two tall units; one for cleaning items (broom, vacuum) and another for bulky kitchen appliances (e.g., pancake maker).
My Dilemma: I need a smart way to store ironing and laundry baskets that keeps them accessible yet away from our cat, who'll join the utility room. I'm debating between a few options:
  1. Shelf vs. Wall Units: Is a shelf a better choice for these items over wall units?
  2. Under Worktop Shelf: Should I have a shelf built under the worktop instead of a cabinet?
  3. Larder Unit Bottom Shelves: Can these be a good spot for clean clothes, and what about dirty laundry?
We segregate laundry by color and bring it down from bedrooms as needed, which requires a spot for the waiting dirty laundry.

I'd appreciate any tips, thanks in advance for your help!

Here's another picture to give a clearer idea of the actual layout

I'm also looking at a very similar layout for our utility. I'm mostly placemarking for ideas too.

On the clean laundry/cat issue, we have a fabric box each for clean washing that sits in the utility. Laundry is folded as it comes out of the dryer/off the pulley and then placed in each person's box. When full they take it up and put their clean laundry away.

The boxes have zip tops and sides so sit on shelves at the moment in a similar position to where you have your larder.

We went for high-up shelves and then spent a bit extra on decent-looking laundry baskets. I guess it depends who's using them. (As it's just me I felt it was more ergonomic.)
If you are able to, leave a bit of a gap so you can slot in your ironing board. (Ours has all the cleaning equipment so we put in a full-height cupboard for all that nonsense.).
Our worktop is also an extra 150 mm deep. (I think it's wonderful / fantastically practical when it comes to laundry sorts.)

I always think an ironing board that “flips” out and it attached to the wall would be great. As well as a hanging rail so things can be hung up straight away to dry or after ironing.

We went with under worktop drawers, DH used ikea pax wardrobe cut in half & laid worktop over it, then bought the wire mesh basket drawers in the same range and managed to fit 8 in 2 columns underneath.

Everyone has 2 drawers, 1 for ironing and 1 for everything else so can easily find their own stuff. And the cat only gets in if someone doesn't close their draw behind them.

I have a couple of folding laundry baskets that fit on top of the stacked washer dryer and a pull out platform between the 2 so can use that set up for loading / unloading and taking out to washing line.

I love my laundry room 🤣

Any change you could share a picture?

No problem @Rainbowshit . I don’t have many and it’s currently overflowing with 2 weeks of holiday washing but these are from when DH finished it.
Sink had to be tucked into the corner because of existing plumbing, but we manage and meant we could 8 baskets.

That looks great! Not sure we have room for so many baskets unfortunately.

Love a pulley.

The pulley is a god send, and if you empty the baskets more than once a month 🤦🏻‍♀️ you wouldn't need so many Blush
