Hi all, talk to me about washer/dryers - are they worth it?

Thinking of getting one.

If you've landed here looking for washer dryer recommendations, we've recently updated our best washer dryers page with lots of reliable options, as tried, tested and loved by Mumsnet users. We hope you find it useful.

I've not had one myself, but most people seem to think they are a bit of a pain, and certainly a lot less useful than having two separate machines.
Of course, if you can't fit two in.....

Anyway, hopefully this will bump your question off 'Unanswered threads' for someone more knowledgeable than myself.

Nope. They never dry very well, and seem to deteriorate in their abilities too. Have been forced to have them a couple of times but, since having children especially, would now always find somewhere to stack washer dryers. We even converted a cupboard for €€€€€s in our rental when we were overseas.

Sorry, that should read - I would always find somewhere to stack SEPARATE washer and dryer now.

I think they are good in theory if you don't have space but want a drier AND if you can tumble dry most of the stuff you own. We can't TD most of our stuff, so I thought the convenience would be lost on us. My brother & his gf love theirs.

I would not recommend one if you do a lot of laundry and like to tumble everything. It would take forever and they really do not do as good a job of the drying as standalone tumble dryers do.

We have had washer-dryers for nearly 20y (we're on our second one). We line dry whenever possible, otherwise using an airer indoors. The tumbler gets used 3-4 times a year, generally for technical clothing which needs to be tumble dried to activate the waterproofing.

We have one because we have no space for two separate machines and a toddler who seems to have a life mission to generate laundry.

You need to read the reviews really carefully. We originally had a great hotpoint one that did actually dry things properly (ie you could take them out of a wash-dry cycle and they could go straight in the cupboard). It broke and was replaced under a "like for like" policy with a slightly different hotpoint version, which is useless. It takes 4hrs to do a wash and dry cycle and stuff still needs putting on a drying rack or the radiator to finish off. Drives me bananas. I can't wait for the weather the change to be able to start hanging clothes outside again.

The other thing is to look carefully at capacity. The drying capacity is usually much lower than the washing capacity so if you want to do a wash and dry cycle, you never end up being able to use the full waahing capacity.

But having said all that, we would still on balance stick with a washer-dryer until we replace our kitchen and can hopefully rejig the layout to fit in separate machines.
