How to clean my wheelie bin

PandaCwtch · 25/03/2024 12:00

I have never cleaned my wheelie bin. Normally this is fine. When the bin is emptied (every 3 weeks) there's normally a bit of dust residue but that's it. I've had the bin emptied this morning, and when I've looked in the bottom, there's a fuzzy mould layer at the bottom. At some point in the last couple of weeks I've emptied the vacuum cleaner directly into the bin, so there's a load of dog hair stuck to it too.

What do I need to do? Is it just a case of swilling it out with the hosepipe to dislodge the mould and then put some bleach or something in it for a few hours and rinse it out?

You can pay people to do this. We’ve got some companies locally and it isn’t very much money.

I pay a bin cleaner who comes with a jet hose once a month. It's very reasonable. He does my wheelie bin and also my food bin. Check on FB in your local area for one

I generally just pour in washing up liquid and a kettle of water and use an old towel or cloth with a sweeping brush and sweep the inside of the bin, then rinse out into the drain and spray a bit of cleaner and scrub if necessary. The joys!!!

Thanks for the replies so far. I'll give the washing up liquid and hot water a go first. I had no idea there were commercial services for this.

Washing up liquid and a broom

Genuine answer...
In the summer holidays (I'm a teacher) I literally empty the bin, tip it on its side and crawl in armed with cleaning products. Mostly Fairy Liquid and a scourer.
Can't afford to pay for someone to clean it so I DIY!!
It's ych a fi (hoping you get this from your username!) but rewarding! 😀

Mine is cleaned every couple of weeks. Cost £3 for 2 bins that are put out on a 3 week cycle

Monthly clean is £4 for ours, it’s washed, wiped out and sprayed with disinfectant.
