Open wardrobe in bedroom

Icedlatteplease · 20/03/2024 21:27

I'm looking at some ikea open wardrobe options for a small spare bedroom about 10foot by 10 foot.

Will literally have two walls of wardrobes and either a daybed or possibly a double if it fits. I'm not sure.

Do they look alright? Im worried they will look too busy/untidy and Ill regret not having doors. If i go for the proper open storage i can get a fair bit in and it significantly cheaper. Alternatively I could go for the pax unit which means if I regret it I can at least add doors later. Can you even do a usefull corner with their open storage?

Help!! I'm rubbish at interior design

I have an open wardrobe- so much easier would never go back to cupboards.

babybirdsmomma · 20/03/2024 22:05

I have open wardrobes and whilst you have to keep it tidy I love it

OurfriendsintheNE · 20/03/2024 22:09

I couldn’t be doing with open wardrobes. I like to close a door, and not have the visual clutter. That’s just my personal preference though, for others it probably makes things more accessible and less likely to end up in a pile at the bottom of the wardrobe.

Icedlatteplease · 20/03/2024 22:15

Oh!! That's really positive!!

I'm not the tidiest soul in the world but it's likely to be primarily housing my coat collection and clothes i dont wear everyday, stuff that if I don't see I tend to forget about!

I have an open wardrobe. Things get dusty. I get out a party dress or jacket (admittedly rarely worn) and the shoulders are thick with dust.

Don't do it unless you are willing to dust your clothes!

Icedlatteplease · 21/03/2024 06:41

Urgh. Less positive

Doors. Get doors - or at least the possibility of doors.

Especially with it being your guest room. Everything will be on display to all your visitors. Stuff gets dusty. Where is the light? Are the clothes going to sit in bright sunshine, unmoving, and so fade unevenly?

We have a tiny room above the stairs, with a door off our bedroom. It has wardrobe hanging in it. I'd love to add doors, but there is no space for them to slide or swing. And that's with a door to shut most of it away.

I would put doors on everything myself. Life is too short to dust piles of jumpers and I need things out of sight for calmness. If I had no doors I would end up buying boxes etc and it would get to be more admin. But it depends your aesthetic and budget. Think about exactly what you would put in there, maybe even take some photos and assemble them together to mock it up.

I love the open wardrobe look, especially if it’s arranged nicely with pretty storage but… from expensive, PPs are correct, clothes get dusty, they fade unevenly even if they aren’t in direct sunlight and it makes moth control difficult. If it’s only a small amount of items that aren’t in regular use, you could use opaque suit covers and storage boxes to protect them from dust, sunlight and moths.

If you are going to do that, I would go with your suggestion of the Ikea Pax as they have have a range of storage options designed to fit plus they have been making them for ever so you don’t have to worry so much about the range being discontinued in a year or two. Nothing more annoying than having a beautiful open wardrobe then finding that the storage you have is no longer available when you need more suit covers or shoe boxes. And you can always add doors in the future.

I had a house with built in open hanging in a dressing room, stuff got dusty/faded so I bought those spring loaded net curtain rods for each 60cm section and hung some cheap voiles. Most of the time they ended up being left open but at least I had the option of pulling them closed to make it look tidy

Jellybean23 · 21/03/2024 22:23

If you study pictures of open wardrobes (and bookcases), you'll notice how carefully the scene has been contrived. Clothes precisely spaced on hangers in toning colours, no clashes, no clutter. If you are 'normal' however, yours won't look like that . I'd opt for PAX so you can add doors later if you want.

Tarquina · 21/03/2024 22:45

You can get wardrobes with sliding doors so you don't need the clearance for the kind of doors that swing open.

Alternatively you could rig up some curtains for the open wardrobes that would both hide all the mess and stop or your clothes from getting dusty.

EndlesslyDistracted · 21/03/2024 22:49

We've got sliding door ones but we don't tend to fully shut them a lot of the time as our cats sneak in and we don't want to accidentally shut them in. The dust and fading are definitely a problem.

Applesandpears23 · 21/03/2024 22:52

We lived with open wardrobes for a long time and the bottom got so filthy. Gave up and got doors, much better!

Kiitos · 21/03/2024 22:55

Surely an open wardrobe defeats the whole point of a wardrobe? Which I assume is to organise and store your clothes away from dust and light?

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 21/03/2024 22:55

I have a walk in closet with bi-fold doors. Dust still collects on the clothes and bunnies form in the nooks and crannies around the shoes on the floor.

Mind you, my long haired cat contributes a lot of that.

theduchessofspork · 21/03/2024 22:56

I know someone who does and it looks great

They are quite tidy though..

PinkArt · 21/03/2024 23:01

I've got an open wardrobe and as a very lazy person it keeps me more organised. When I had doors they never got closed and I'd end up hanging things on them. I did get a pax so I had the option though so I think that's a good shout.
Things are hung in rough colour order so the rainbow helps keep it visually more coherent.
Never had an issue with any of my clothes getting dusty and stuff often goes a year without being worn.

WorkingFromHomeShite · 21/03/2024 23:28

The light will ruin your clothes unless it’s in one of those dressing rooms with no windows.

I am still traumatised from my best T-shirt being ruined on the washing line a few years ago, I don’t even hang anything coloured on the washing line any more 😩

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 21/03/2024 23:31

DH and I got IKEA wardrobes a couple of years ago , mine is a double ....and they didn't have the doors . I've got used to it and it looks ok as I tend to put my clothes in groups so its tidy .

I really should get doors, it's on the ToDoList .

DH has doors as does DD

EndorsingPRActice · 21/03/2024 23:38

My DD has a huge pax one in her bedroom, she loves it. I don’t like them, it just looks like one big mess to me, it would take quite a bit of effort to keep everything tidy, and DD isn’t bothered about this. I haven’t noticed that the clothes fade but there is a small amount of dust in the sections that aren’t used so much. DD’s has a section with drawers which is quite large and that part is really good.
