Dishwasher basket or cutlery drawer

My dishwasher has packed in. A lot if new ones have a cutlery drawer this is new to me. How do people find these or should I stick to basket

I love my tray - it has its own spray arm too! As I'm in charge of the dishwasher (most of the time - yes I will refill it if someone else has done it because I fit things in better!) I don't mind putting the cutlery in item by item. I've adjusted the other racks so our plates, glasses (with and without stems), chopping boards, baking trays and saucepans fit. It's an 18 year old Miele and when it eventually needs replacing I will have a cutlery tray (and probably a Miele!)

Having had both, I much prefer the drawer. Easier to manage and seems to get cutlery cleaner.

Drawer much better. If you organise as you load only 3 handfuls to go back in the cutlery drawer.

Chantelle Atkins might still be alive today if she'd had a cutlery drawer

Too right!

Our new dishwater has the rack at the top. Took a while to get used to, as with the basket, you can just lift it out and take it over to the cutlery drawer without having to make several trips.

However, , not having the basket frees up space, so you can put more in the dishwater, so I put it on less.

If you have teens they will never bother to load a tray properly. So basket all the way

So true

Basket - I find the tray so limiting with glasses and I know I can move it down but that means the plates can't rack properly. It's a Miele.
In another house I have a cheap dishwasher with a basket and I much prefer it

Keep the basket from your old one then you'll have both (or two if you don't go with a tray)

Having a tray makes the dishwasher cost £200 more.

I really pushed for a model with a basket and ended up with a tray. I am converted. I read the manual as to how to use it, and it’s actually really good and so much better!

HighlandCowRose · 13/03/2024 16:10

Definitely drawer/tray, the cutlery is much quicker to unload, comes out cleaner and no basket frees up space on the bottom level.

When we bought our dishwasher, I lost the tray v basket argument. I should have fought to the death. That fucking tray had always been a nightmare, but 5/6 months ago it decided it was never coming out of its cave again. I have to use a spatula or egg lifter to raise the white squirter whilst gently pulling the bastard out. I can almost hear it sniggering to itself (whilst I rub butter off my arm with a dishcloth) and I despise it to the point where I am ready to wrench it forth, possibly causing irreparable damage. However, my darling husband is saying “Just let me figure it out… I think I know which part to order… “. 😖😖😖
Will it be homicide or washercide?

I have a tray. Love it. So tidy. I only ever used a basket when staying with friends as I didn’t have a dishwasher for a long time. Loathed the way everything got mixed up.

BUT, when I designed my kitchen, it’s dining room, archway, drawers with bench over, dishwasher with sink drainer over then the rest. In those drawers, I have my cutlery drawer at the top and plates, bowls, cups and glasses in the two below. Table to bench is two steps, dishwasher below, unpack dishwasher into drawers beside it. Two steps to the table again to start the cycle over.

I was adamant that this was how my triangle of use would go and I will never change it. Dishwasher tray means all cutlery has its own section and you just gather up in one hand for transferring. Best thing.
