How to get rid of sweat smells!

Desperately looking for tips on how to get rid of sweat smells from laundry! It's mainly my teenage daughter's school shirts.
I've tried everything - bicarbonate of soda, vinegar, calgon, anti-bac wash stuff and all kinds of detergents that are supposed to help! I think tumble drying was making it worse so now just line drying her shirts but the smell is still there!!
Occasionally I've thought it's washed out but then comes back again when dry!
It's not my washing machine, I clean it regularly and everything else is fine just school shirts and a couple of her sport tops!
Any tips?
Or am I just at the stage of binning her shirts and buying new? School shirts aren't exactly cheap, and now just noticed a smell in a fairly new Nike t shirt! Argh!

I use a supermarket spray that I rub in to armpits of my clothes and then I line dry. I’ve used vodka on some very strong smells. However I think the main thing is to try to avoid it - for me I cannot wear clothes more than once and I use a very strong antiperspirant that I top up on hot days. However I have heard of others using face cleanser or hand sanitiser straight on to their armpits and having good results so I am going to give this a go too.

I soak for a few hours in hot water and white wine vinegar (about a third of a bottle for a sinkful of water). Then wash at 40 using persil and dettol laundry cleanser in drawer.
to prevent encourage antibacterial soap over shower gel for pits, flannel or sponge/shower puff to give a proper rub.

Prevention. What deodorant is she wearing? Is she washing properly? Soap is much more effective than shower gel

Yeah I think the problem has been hygiene allowing the smell in the first place but she is doing much better now with regular showers and she is using soap to wash her pits too instead of shower gel. She's using sure 72h deodorant.
She has also been not changing her shirts often enough which I'm working on with her and she's getting better.
I will give vodka a try, haven't done that! Vinegar soak and spray directly on the shirts has been tried unfortunately!
I think I might be at the stage of getting new shirts and starting again!

Yes, you might need to start again if new system of 72 hr deodorant and washing with soap has started, and hopefully the new shirts will never get as bad again.

For teen shirts (and also the ones of mine that sit tight under the armpit), I scrub the armpit area inside with a brush and some Persil laundry detergent. Then leave them overnight. Then wash on the long anti-allergy setting - at 60 if they are cotton tops and can stand it, at 40 if printed t shirts etc. But definitely not just on the quick wash setting. I also include a cap of dettol anti-bac liquid in the wash.

It’s a massive, boring pain once a week. But if I don’t do it, the tops just smell of sweat when they warm up. For some really old ones I eventually had to chuck and start again.

Could you wash with washing soda on a 60 degree wash to strip out the smell, then re wash?

I have had some success with freezing some of the worst affected to kill the bacteria

FourNiltotheArsenal · 10/03/2024 16:06

Ace bleach - spray it on the smelly bits, leave on for around 20 minutes and then wash with another capful in with the detergent. Works a treat on sweat smells, you can see the bleach (safe for colours) fizzing away on the smelly bits.

I put some zoflora in the first section of the washing machine draw when I'm washing my partners gym gear. It hasn't harmed the clothes and it's definitely helped with the smell.

Xyz1234567 · 10/03/2024 17:12

Shower every morning, strong deodorant, clean shirt every day and wash them all on the weekend, 60 degrees long wash.

Octavia64 · 10/03/2024 17:18

You may need to replace.

I sweat a lot and it smells.

I use Dettol anti bacterial soap and sometimes shower twice in a day.

Dettol laundry cleaner and I wash tops after one wear,

Still if it's gym stuff it doesn't last long.

If they are white shirts then try this spray for whites. It's basically bleach for white clothes. Think i got mine in morrisons
