Limescale in Toilet

It's driving me mad. Has anyone found a product that actually works? I've had some solution in the loo all day. Just been scrubbing and hacking away at it but barely an improvement.

I have used the harpic tablets (can't remember what they're called they're in a black box and you leave them in the bowl overnight)

purplecorkheart · 07/03/2024 16:49

I use the black Harpic liquid. Your need to scoop all the water out of the bowl and pour plenty in and leave it overnight. You might have to do that a couple of times but it will get rid of it.

These are great. We live in a really hardwater area and limescale is a real pain. Leave one in overnight and then scrub again in the morning.

I have a toilet in spare bathroom that gets a similar build up if it's not done on the regular!
I get as much of the water out as possible and then leave black harpic to sit on the sides for as long as possible. Black harpic lifts it for me.

Try citric acid. Empty as much water as possible. Pour in citric acid crystals and leave for some hours.

Thank you everyone

I'd stick a whole bottle of harpic down as a one off, leave it overnight and then brush with toilet brush. It should then go away.

Have you thought of getting a water softener? We recently renovated and have saved on descaling the toilets, shower screens, I use less shampoo and soap etc. I used to use descaling things ALL the time, and dont even have one in the house now.

If that isn't an option, try these harpic tablet things. I always added 1 more than the pack said .

Black Harpic. The only thing that worked for me. Even caustic soda didn't work but black harpic did!

AsTheyPulledYouOutOfTheOxygenTent · 07/03/2024 20:31

Black tabs of doom. If they don't work then take all the water out of the bowl and then apply Limelite gel.

Lemoncurtain · 07/03/2024 20:50

I disagree with pp, black harpic did nothing for my heavily limescaled toilet. HG limescale remover dealt with some heavy buildup and then the blue harpic has kept it at bay

twiddlingthumbs69 · 07/03/2024 20:55

I had the exact same problem, I'd tried everything! In the end I used one of those Harpic bomb things, left it ages, flushed, emptied the toilet of water, sprayed the lime scale with viakal and then scraped it with the back of a toothbrush. It came off in chunks!
The satisfaction was immense.

BrassicaBabe · 07/03/2024 20:57

I picked this tip up recently elsewhere on MN...drain cleaner. Like mr muscle. It's much heavier/gloopier than toilet cleaner. Works a treat for me

Myohmywonderful · 07/03/2024 23:23

I’ve successfully used a pumice stone for a bad build up. Get the water out and scrub with a pumice stone (doesn’t damage your toilet at all).

SingsongSu · 07/03/2024 23:27

I get this too. I use a sponge to get every drop of water out the bowl then spray Viakal down there. Leave it for couple of hours then it easily lifts off with a bit of a scrub. Works brilliantly.

UpsideLeft · 07/03/2024 23:28

I just use bleach and harpic and my toilet is spotless not a spot of limescale

Could you try putting loads of bicarbonate of soda in there over night

Distilled white vinegar ? Usually excellent for limescale although not sure when diluted with water

Viakal ?

UpsideLeft · 07/03/2024 23:30

But yes as PP if you can get the water out distilled white vinegar overnight should clear it

hoppalong · 07/03/2024 23:30

Pour a jug of boiling water down the pan and throw in some citric acid. Leave for an hour and then it scrubs off really easily.

Macaroni46 · 08/03/2024 12:15

I've used dishwasher tablets before. Just throw into the toilet and leave it to work its magic.

Hotairblues · 08/03/2024 19:43

Another vote for a pumice stone. They come on a long handle and are so soft they don’t scratch it but it lifts it off in seconds. We got a pack of 4 from Amazon for about a fiver and they’re lasting ages.

This. Crucial to remove the water first. You can scoop out with a small jug first and then use cloths to soak it up. Once you have it clean, drop a spoonful of citric acid in and leave overnight once a week.

Lucythecleaner · 09/03/2024 00:36

Rub a two pence over it. It just comes off easy

ouch321 · 09/03/2024 00:46

Kilrock Big K plus hot water.

Leave a few mins then brush.

It's powerful stuff. Use it in kettle too.

Mameem · 09/03/2024 09:32

Pour a can of Coca-cola down there.

GiveYourHeadAWobble · 09/03/2024 10:36

I use dishwasher tablets. Just put one in and leave it overnight.
